The same as it did to end last season.
Merino just adds more solid depth and capable of starting any game himself.
Merino is coming in as a starter. No doubts about it.

Which likely means one of Havertz/Jesus starting up top, with the other on the bench.
Rice - Merino - Odegaard is a tasty midfield for sure.

We know Mikel loves his left footers. I’m going to assume that Calafiori is a leftie? Gabriel, Cala, Merino, Odegaard, Zinny, Jesus and Fabio as left footed options for balance.

Where will Jorgino/Party/Vieira play when we are buying and he is supposed to be a starter.
Does that mean both Party and Jorgino will be benched

Yes. I think the plan is to use them more as cover rather than nailed on starters like they were for certain periods last season.
I really would urge fans away from this “first eleven” mentality. It’s a squad of players with different talents who will be picked depending on what the tactics require. Gone are the days when you know half the bench have absolutely no chance of getting on because the boss doesn’t trust them.
Let the manager worry about who starts and who finishes.
