Fucking hell, that’s so awful.
Terrible news to wake up to. Wtf.
Just rolled out of bed, myself. How awful. My condolences to his loved ones, and to his fans.
RIP
The Guardia Civil has told BBC Sport that Jota and his brother died at about 00:30 local time on Thursday.
They said that their car, a Lamborghini, left the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking another vehicle and then caught fire.
Horrific way to go.
wow cant believe this
Literally from one of the best periods of your life to your absolute worst.
I’ve just heard of how he went out as well, so awful.
Wow, RIP. One of the best super subs of all time.
Having got the guy in my fantasy football team a few times over the last few years, especially when he was at Wolves, his loss feels a bit personal. RIP.
Just awful news. Really feel for his family and wife. Only recently married and had his whole life ahead of him. RIP.
This Jota news has affected me more than I thought it would. Woke up this morning still thinking about this and how his young family will have to cope with such a sudden and irreparable loss.
Life can really be a bitch sometimes.
Apparently his jersey will be “immortalised” according to Romano.
Well they retired the #20 shirt. I think that’s what he meant.
I hear you. I lost my 25 year old cousin back in May, there hasn’t been a morning since the day it happened that I don’t wake up with that realisation in the forefront of my mind. It puts everything into perspective.
Yeah, I figured that was probably what it meant but wondered if the wording may have meant a permanent spot in the stadium or something like that.
I think it’ll probably be both. They’ll almost certainly have some memorial to Jota.
Very sorry for your loss mate. And yeah, losing someone puts things into perspective for sure.
My neighbour passed away in May. Our relationship was limited to short conversations now and then when we saw each other (and we didn’t even speak the same language), usually just greeting each other in the mornings. But still, the first few weeks after he passed, I couldn’t help but think about him every now and then. So you losing someone close like a cousin, I can only imagine mate.
The Jota tragedy has some real footballing ramifications that might shift Liverpool’s summer plans. He had trouble staying healthy but he always gave them a really good level when on the pitch and he was Slot’s first choice CF when available.
I don’t really see them doing a U Turn on Darwin or Chiesa, who Slot just doesn’t rate and already have one foot out the door. Slot doesn’t view Elliott as a forward and Wirtz has completely killed his pathway, so he’s a non-factor too.
That would leave them with only a 33-year-old Salah who will miss 5-6 matches for AFCON, Diaz, and Gakpo in the forward line. They clearly will buy a striker but they just need depth as well. Wirtz can play LW but that’s the position they have best covered anyway so its not a huge help.
I think they’re going to be very active, two forwards at a minimum coming in and maybe three.
Can’t see them signing 3 but let’s just hope they stay away from isak and Nunez decides to be very picky over his next club costing them any decent fee.
Gakpo started last season well at CF so don’t think they’ll be averse to using him as the first / utility backup again across all 3 slots. It’s whether they sign a true starter or not.
Diaz - new CF - Salah
(Wirtz - Gakpo - Chiesa)
You can see why the rumours of them dropping 150m on isak were flying around though, would make a lot of sense despite the wirtz deal.
Even if Isak was available, I wonder whether they can now afford to drop that much money on one player when they clearly need at least two if not three.
Chiesa is gone. He played 108 league minutes last year and was about as useless as Sterling. Wirtz can help but its the same thing with Nwaneri where its dangerous from a depth perspective to start double counting him in different positions. If he’s playing in the forward line then the’ve only got four midfielders Slot is willing to play in Gravenberch, MacAllister, Szobo, and Jones. Slot doesn’t rate Endo one bit.
We found out the hard way last season that if you go into the year with only five forwards you can count on, things can go bad fast. Right now they only have three and that’s if Diaz stays.
