Why would anyone ever compare Mustafi and VVD? They play for different teams, under different managers with different styles. The variables between Arsenal and Liverpool are huge which would make comparison pointless.
However, comparing two CBs with similar mins, usage in the same position and on the same team is a perfectly valid and accurate comparison

It shows how stats mean so little when it comes to defending. Youāre essentially completely ignoring the most important point of defending, which is not making mistakes that cost goals. Sokratis is infinitely better in this aspect of defending to Mustafi and it was never close.
Youāre rating Mustafi over Sokratis for winning the ball more often when he also is out of position and not marking the attacker or blocking the crossed balls far far more often also. But there isnāt really a stat to illustrate that.
Yep, Sevchenko pointed out in the past that Mustafi is a better defender than Sokratis because he wins the ball more often.

Iād like to move everybody except Aubameyang, Lacazette, Bellerin, Torreira and the youngsters, but where are you getting the money to replace all these players with better ones? Iāve said all along that the alleged Ā£40 million budget was nonsense, but itās not Ā£400 million for damn sure. Arsenal simply canāt spend Ā£27 million on Saliba, then turn around and spend Ā£40 million each on two new center backs (which wonāt necessarily get you great established center backs considering that the likes of frickinā Harry Maguire are being quoted at Ā£90 million).
I understand your impatience, but we have to be realistic. Arsenal simply canāt do everything in one summer. They need to replace players gradually, not all in one fell swoop. They have to try to address the biggest problems this summer and go from there. Until now, replacing Koscielny was not among their biggest problems because theyāre already close to replacing him next summer.

Thereās the dumb challenge by Mustafi leading to the spot kick.
Iād also take a look at the equally dumb challenge that gave them the free kick given away by Sokritis being caught out of position. Totally awful options.

My argument at the time was that Sokratis is closer in ability to Mustafi than the best defenders in the league.
I dont really care which one is better because theyāre both terrible error prone CBs who should not be starting for this club.
Itās remarkable how Sokratis is seen as some impenetrable wall when his play last season was riddled with high and low profile errors which cost goals which basically got swept under the rug because heās vocal and animated on the pitch?

This is the absolute truth. A bang average defender who is glorified by sections of the Arsenal support despite possessing poor positioning, rash challenges (as evidenced by his near 1 in 2 record for yellow cards) and generally just falling way below the top defenders.

Sokratis is a strange one for me. I agree heās been annoying and we defo need an upgrade, but he probably exceeded my expectations from when we signed him. I was gutted when we signed him.
