Could it be she’s really a supporter of the Reform Party and by taxing working class people more than the rich or big business it will get them more votes? ![]()
Corbyn should have brought me on as an executive consultant.
First thing I would have told him is to name the party property from the off, refer no executive decisions to members and don’t involve Sultana in anyway in relation to the founding or operation of the Party
Have you seen the shortlist for what will be the permanent name? Fucking hell ![]()
I was such a massive Corbyn fan. I’ve moved on from being left wing enough to support him now but it’s still a bit sad to see him end up in such a mess.
Not really sure why this is in the Labour Party thread? Doesn’t really suggest he is capable of running anything, let alone the Country!
You should be happy we’re laughing at somebody that isn’t Starmer. Count your blessings.
Makes no difference to me who you make fun of! ![]()
Meh the Your Party fiasco doesn’t really deserve it own thread nor is it general news. Feel appropriate to post here given two well known former labour figures are involved and the party is intended challenging Labour
She seems like an absolute nightmare lol
Fair point. Thread title updated.
At least the thread is more reflective now of the discussion…![]()
Still feeling confident about our bets, @The_Invincibles?
What were your bets?
I believe it was about how long Starmer and Reeves will last. Or possibly whether Labour will see out their term.
Also, am I imagining this, or in the past was it the done thing for governments to call GE’s after 4 years rather than waiting for the 5 year term to be up? I can vaguely remember being told as a kid that calling the election after 4 years expressed confidence of a win, whereas holding out for the end of 5 years projected a belief on the part of the incumbent government that they might lose.
I definitely remember it being part of the discussion about Major’s government in 1997.
(Ironically John Major was a bit of a joke at the time, but whenever I’ve heard him speak since and especially with respect to Brexit I’ve often thought he was a man British politics needed to hear more from).
I think time has treated Major with more fairness than he got back then.
I think when you take over from someone who has been in power that long you end up inheriting all the shit that they had the power to keep a lid on and ultimately you end up being the scapegoat.
Same thing happened with Gordon Brown after Blair. He was actually a really sensible and decent leader too but was always destined to get shafted after 10 years of Blair.
I’ve always quite liked Gordon Brown as well.
Yeah same he was super hard done by.
Selling our gold reserves at an all time low prices was a really terrible bit of policy for sure, especially when seen in light of current prices, but I think overall he was a decent PM that got a hard time after that many years of Blair and inheriting the financial crisis.
He’d have done a better job of guiding Britain through the post 2008 crash period than those austerity obsessed freaks did.
I’ve got to try to be haven’t I!?!?! Long way to go yet @JakeyBoy ![]()
The timing of General Elections are determined by the Prime Minister. I don’t think there is clear evidence that calling an earlier election is always better - historical precedent shows many Governments continued for the full 5 year term, although many were forced to call an election earlier as they lost their majority. Thatcher called all of hers (1983 and 1987) at 4 year intervals, as did Blair (2001 and 2005) despite both being in strong positions. The Coalition Government went the full 5 years, but then Teresa May famously called an early election and lost her majority. Boris had to do the same, to break the deadlock for Brexit. Gordon Brown should have called an earlier election but got cold feet. All the indications were that we would have won a majority, but he instead decided to go the full term and lost out.
Your reference to the Major Government is correct though. They effectively remained in Government for as long as they could, similar to the last Conservative Government, but knew the writing was on the wall - it was just a case of how heavy the defeat would be.
