It really does bring a tier to my eye
Not a weird take at all as it seems like pretty much every Arsenal fan is on the same page but given injuries, coach preferences heāll go down as an underachiever here but I canāt remember in recent times parting with a player on that basis that I am so sorry to see let go.
Genuinely wished it worked out different both for him and us.
Will be remembered fondly. Cheers KT for making lockdown Arsenal a little less shit to watch
Still think heās our best left back!
Dud of a transfer in my eyes. Came at a pretty big fee for a left back at the time, always injured and nothing special outside of the odd spell of bombing down the left and spamming crosses in.
For context - he was one of the top 5 most expensive left backs in football history when we signed him. Brittle body, underwhelming in 1v1 situations and honestly feel like fans just loved him because he carried a fucking Tesco bag around and wore a short sleeve t shirt in the winter months.
Canāt argue with any of what you said. He wasnāt a special player. What was refreshing about him was his willingness to cross the ball with decent quality. Unfortunately, we very rarely benefited from those crosses.
The Tesco bag and short sleeves and shorts in the winter certainly is what endeared him to most people, not his football.
I think it was a matter of contrast that made him stick out. He was a competent player in a shit squad and shitter defense (hello Mustafi, Kolasinac, Socrates and Bellerinā¦Cech.)
Some people read the Tierney transfer as a sign that we were turning a corner from an embarrassing period.
He was a big upgrade when he first arrived. But the team progressed a long way to the point where he was no longer a serious contender for a first team place.
Maybe it could have been different if not for the injuries hampering his progress.
The thing I think that was underrated and one of the biggest factors about his signing was that he was already captain for Celtic at such a young age. Compared to the dross and mentality we had in our ranks at the time, this was like a breath of fresh air for me and it really felt like we were not just signing a talented footballer, but also a character that could have had an affect on the team/club
Who knows how his career could have progressed without being hampered with injuries? He had all the tools to be a top quality PL defender thatās for sure.
He may have captained them but he wasnāt their main captain. Skinhead Scott Brown i think would have held that. (Edit: thats probably what you meant reading it back. Donāt mind me)
But i do get the point. He was a step above in that regard absolutely.
Kieran Fookin Tierney.
Thatās a great little vid.
Good to see some mutual respect between Arsenal and Celtic going on.
