I had to check and in the league cup semi final against Liverpool in 2022 he played Ramsdale in goal who I believe was our first choice at that time. We also lost that game funnily enough.
I think Arsenal generally have always taken that approach in the Cupsā¦personally I donāt have a problem with playing the reserve GK in the Cups. I also donāt want to sell Keppa in the summer, because it is becoming clear that we need to prioritise attacking reinforcements.
I raised the question because Iām not convinced that the āCup keeperā thing exists under Arteta. I link it back to people being annoyed that Ramsdale barely got a look in as second choice.
This insistence on playing Kepa as I suggested before seems to be more about proving a point that he trusts him than it being the Arteta way.
I donāt blame Kepa for yesterday by the way.
Neto was our backup goalkeeper not our cup keeper. ![]()
I havenāt got a problem with either really. It just seemed that Kepa was in the firing line after a poor performance and starting him yesterday felt more as a display of faith.
Weāll never know now.
It does this season though. As evidenced by this season.
lol! Maybe the club need to put on a special badge on the shirt next year so we as fans can differentiate between first choice, back up and cup keeper!
It goes back to my original question of what has inspired it. Itās not something that I remember being a feature of his management.
Personally, Iād move Kepa on. Not because I think heās poor but because he really doesnāt suit our style.
Neto did better than Kepa tbf.
He played less. ![]()
If I had my way weād have a first choice and a Stuart Taylor. A professional back up.
Can we get Scott Carson out of retirement?
Scott Carson has 500 career appearances. He is an amateur at being a back up.
Why is Keppa not a professional backup?
Because heās a cup keeper. Keep up.
This question interested me so I did some digging on Transfermarkt (some early cup exits meant it didnāt take too long).
Indicates that our ācup keeperā was Emi Martinez and he was an enforced first choice towards the back end of that season anyway.
The early cup exits are the most alarming thing here!
Welcome to Online Arsenal!
Keppa is the backup GK, not just a Cup keeper. Why is he not a professional backup?
I direct you to the quoted answer.
