José Mourinho

If City didn’t do funny business, Arteta would have won the title with squad assembled last season so that is the most expensive number for reference.
Are you sure Pep could win the title with the squad we had last season?

haha

He’s right.

You only have to look at his first season at City.

Is this regarding changing the offside rule to benefit the attacker?

I agree with Wenger on that one. Anyone remember the league cup final we lost against Chelsea when we played all the kids? If I recall correctly, Drogba scored a goal which could have been offside. Everybody in the press said he was onside because out defender’s leg kept him on, I think it was Senderos. By today’s standards, absolutely offside but for some reason, the narrative or the rule was different then. Tottally suited Mourinho then.

That all being said, I do think the benefit should be to the attacker, it’ll make games far more exciting.

Just gone ahead and found it, I may have remembered it more offside, go figure.

It would have been one to draw the lines for, god knows which way it would go.

Do we really lack goals? I really don’t understand.

Didn’t the PL just break the record for goals scored in a season or something?
Anyway, this rule definitely benefits the attacker but what it will actually end up doing is make managers drop high lines and offside traps because it’d be so hard to time them properly.
Hence, you’ll see teams play more conservative football and as a result get even less goals.

Fair point.

Yeah that Drogba goal was very much offside.

Also, Mourinho can go suck a big bag of dicks. He’s washed.

What will Mourinho call himself now? The washed up one?

I also don’t buy this narrative of Mourinho doing great without funds. Apart from Porto, the guy got found out in every team that had limited funds(scums, Roma (49% win rate during his time there)). Also got found out at United despite having decent money to spend. His 2nd stint at Chelsea wasn’t great either. His only major success came at clubs where money was no problem (Chelsea, Madrid, Inter). He is a decent manager no doubt, but he ain’t as good as some make him out to be.

You’re undervaluing what he achieved with Inter.

Not that Inter was poor but they were certainly not throwing around money like crazy under him.

They’d have said he was level and even if he wasn’t level, you ‘should’ give the advantage to the attacker.

Personally, I think he’s onside. But it’s bad defending from the Arsenal to even let Drogba run off the backline like.

That Chelsea team is narrow as fuck too. Zero width. I’ve never seen this game and now I’m tempted to go back in time.

Spent 98m in the 2009/10 transfer window. For context, Tevez was the most expensive premier league signing that season at 25m.

Mourinho was the biggest spending manager in Europe when he went to Chelsea, buying two world class players for every position yet still played boring football.

It was effective and won them loads of trophies but not that entertaining and he had a petulant, spiteful personality as well.

Mourinho did not buy two world class players for every position.

I know people like to drag Jose but his 04-06 Chelsea team is in any discussion for greatest ever PL side.

His body of work at Porto and Inter is as good as what any manager ever did in European football. And his Chelsea team are legendary.

Real Madrid was his unravelling and the second half of his career has seen a steady decline but not many coaches really have the longevity to be successful for longer than around 10ish years anyway.

Jose was undoubtedly a world class coach in his prime. People are too quick to dismiss his body of work as being a direct result of money but neglect the fact that his Inter team was not a mega mega bucks experiment and his Porto success was outstanding and the last example of an underdog winning the European cup.

He did what people say great managers don’t do and that’s win big trophies with an underdog. And then he did what great managers do and assembled great sides at top clubs and win.

Jose is one of the games greatest coaches. He’s top 10 in that bracket.

They’re both greats of the game and will be remembered for a very long time. Strong rivalry too, right up till old age which seems to be rare in football management.
