That cheating bastard ![]()
What an afternoon that was.
Record signing at the time, wasn’t he?
I think wiltord was until Arshavin
I remember being so excited when we signed him, these were the days when we had a big pull within the game, such a shame how his career panned out with us, and such a sad ending to his life.
I vividly remember all the talk being that Reyes was our new record signing. I think this is because the potential end sum was £17.5 million, which eclipsed the £13m spent on Wiltord.
But I believe Reyes was more like £10.5m up front, so unless Wiltord was bought for £13m up front, Reyes wouldn’t have been our record signing at the time of the deal. But later could have become it if we ended up having to meet some of those clauses that could have seen it rise to the full amount. But I don’t think anyone knows whether we’d have paid those Reyes clauses or not in the end.
I think its all a bit too murky and ill defined to say for certain either way. I should add that this is all from memory and I haven’t googled any of these figures, so I could be talking total shit here lol
Brilliant player. Haven’t had a winger like him since.
Ended up having a pretty decent career, won 5 Europa Leagues and a La Liga title, plus the league and FA Cup when he was here.
Ah god I remember this game so well, one of the few I was able to go to at that time.
Such a shame how it all turned out for him here, and obviously incredibly sad how his life was cut short.
Much like Navas he was never going to travel well, but at least he thrived for Sevilla
Excellent player. A young Reyes woyld walk into this current team
What a talent he was. Good to remind, myself in the first place… He was only 20 at the time.
Already looke quite refined and mature on the pitch, didn’t look out of place with his link up together with Henry and the rest and it takes a lot just to be able to do that.
Imo, I still maintain it was a wrong move to push him to the wing. Yeah, he was a pretty good winger by the time he left, still only 22… And still had plenty or room to grow. But I just though he was perfect as a second striker in that 442 we played, had everything for it… Always thought he was pretty clinical, although still wasn’t getting into positions enough. Great eye for a pass, obviously a great dribbler and also had great work rate… I’d also say he was a very good athete, very resilent and tough. Was barely injured while being the most fouled played in the league probably (obviously he never like that). Coped with the intensity of the league brilliantly, especially for such a young player from Spain.
RIP
I think I’ve always subliminally compared the impact of new signings, forwards especially to 0:41 here:
4 years today since his passing

He was honestly so good and I genuinely hate how quickly his career at Arsenal nosedived.
He would walk into this current team. He was that good.
I know this is the Reyes thread but check out the master doing what he did best for the assist.
Nothing much, just a nutmeg on one player, and then a millimeter perfect pass that goes around Reiziger, with exactly the right weight to beat him but not Reyes. Dennis was god’s gift to the game.
