Yeah I might have to take that route. Sucks because I like my job and team. It’s always HR that fucks shit up. If I were president I’d deport all HR people. Fucking useless dickheads.

Sorry to hear what you are going through…I may be being dense here, but what reason have HR given you for denying your request to attend a medical appointment?

What do your company’s HR policies say about taking time off for a medical appointment?

Seems to me that you have made a very reasonable request, and they are being totally unreasonable in denying your request.

They gave me a generic spiel that went something like “PTO is approved based on project requirements”. No exact reason why.
From my experience HR only exists to cover their own ass.

I live in what is called a “right to work” state which just means that unions and collective bargaining are prohibited thus companies can fire you whenever for any reason and workers have no recourse via the government.

Do you work in the UK?

Maybe I’m being dense here but wouldn’t HR have to go to your manager to do that refusal? How else would they know about project requirements etc.

Wouldn’t mind a new job, but “unfortunately” my current employer pays me quite a bit better than other organisations would for the same job. Jobs one step up from mine in terms of seniority at other organisations basically pay the same wage I’m on now, or marginally worse.

I’ve jokingly complained to a few colleagues about these bastards essentially trapping up with their generous salaries (1st world problems, right? :grin:)

It is tricky though… my manager is on mid to long term sick leave, I’m not really getting the support I need, a few colleagues have recently left or been on sick leave too, meaning I’ve had to pick up the slack and keep the whole team functioning. I’m also approaching two years in this role and am starting to feel a little bit like I could do with a new challenge, but there’s no way in this current economy that I can tolerate any sort of dip in pay. Looks like I might need to have a good long think about an entirely different sort of role.

C2C were hiring train drivers recently, no experience needed, full training provided etc - 75k a year! I’ve got no real desire to drive a train lol, but that’s not tooooo far off doubling my salary lmao. Seriously considering applying next time they’re recruiting.

3 years driving a train and then a move into working for the RMT union for the rest of my career does sound like a bit of me, tbf :grin:

I’m assuming not, the UK protects the right to start or join a union so long it’s not a tiny business with only a handful of employees, for some reason. If a business has an HR department then they’ll be a big enough for the workers to have a right to a union.

Though unions are very unusual in the financial sector where it’s more of a dog-eat-dog world, but the contracts for those jobs are better.

For example mine has a “salary support” insurance policy that pays me 70% of my salary if I’m off for longer than 6 months. It takes the pressure off the employer because they’re no longer paying the wages for the absent person, just paying your NI and pension contributions. I’m rather hoping @KITN has this benefit too so he can just relax and forget about work for now.

When my lot was taken over by a larger, well-known insurance company some fuckwit in HR accidentally sent UK, US and EU versions of the standard contract of employment. The EU employees got 30 days holiday and a retirement date of 60, UK 24 days’ holiday/retirement 67, US 10 days’ holiday, can’t remember the retirement date. It was jaw dropping the difference in terms and conditions. People in the US are simply tiny cogs in a money making machine, Employment rights are pretty shit here, but far worse over there.

I wish I could move to an EU country but glad I wasn’t born in the US

It is tricky situation and there are a lot of people in a similar position to you that would ideally want to move jobs or careers but can’t risk taking a drop in salary. I’m not in a dissimilar position atm in all honesty. Having just gone through a round of recruitment in my team, we have managed to recruit a few people who are looking for a change in career and in return we will give them the opportunity to retrain and develop into the role. In the medium term, they will be on a higher salary than they are atm with the ability to progress and earn more, but the cost of changing careers can be that you have to accept a short term drop in salary. To be able to do this though, you do need to have some wriggle room in your financial situation. I always hope people are happy in their jobs because we spend so much of our time working. I hope it works out for you…if your manager is off sick, is there the opportunity for you to step up in the short term?
