Sandals and jandals (NZ word for flip flops) are different things. Sandals are not acceptable but jandals are absolutely acceptable in all settings.

They are what Brits call ‘flip flops’ and Aussies call ‘thongs’. In NZ, we call them jandals and they are a cultural icon for us.
