Yes, he should have just continued running towards Jota and tackled him to get a RED card himself. What was doing assessing the situation, realizing he had misjudged it, and then retreating.

Or, maybe, as an experienced player and captain of your national side, you realize that being the last defender in that scenario, if you were to commit a foul, you will end up getting sent off, like you have been on many previous occasions. You realize that the smarter play there is to stay on your feet and distract Jota in anyway possible. If he still scores, so be it, we have the majority of the game to get back. But getting sent off that early in the game will put a lot of pressure on the rest of the team and ruin the game plan and tactics the team had worked on all week.
But what do I know, am no expert, neither have I played at a professional level.

I think a number of people have said Ramsdale was at fault for this tbf. He didn’t have a good game and this goes down as a “half mistake”, in my opinion.
If Ramsdale is out further, outside his box for example, Robertson is immediately put off playing that long ball towards Jota. Ramsdale’s thought process ought to have been to immediately cover the space left vacated by his central defender, who’s pushed forward.
On the other hand (and why I allude it to being a half mistake), the airborne ball, GK well out of his box, he can’t head it, can’t handle it. It’s a tricky one. (Again, however, if Robertson sees Ramsdale there, he doesn’t play that ball in the first place)
