I can see your point, but I doubt the players will retreat into their shells any more than they already do. The squad will reflect on the result, the overall performance and the fans’ reaction over the next few days. I don’t for a second believe that players like Bellerin, Holding, Tierney, Guendouzi etc. will be deeply impacted by this incident. They know it was a shit result and they know that there are players in the team who aren’t up to scratch - the same players who let the side down consistently.
Fans turning on the manager or turning on certain players (perhaps in not such a high-profile way) happens all the time. Chelsea literally do this same song and dance every season, and the players have routinely come out the other side, and carried on performing. The strong ones at least, and they have had quite a few of those over the years.
Xhaka being our captain epitomises everything wrong at the club. This incident shatters any illusions there might have been about his fitness for the armband. No captain of a club, particularly of one as historied as ours, should ever behave this way and be allowed to walk away unscathed.
However, this is all Emery’s doing by making him captain. Put the fucker right in the line of sight of the fanbase, and they have poured all their venom directly on to him. He is being scapegoated - he is definitely not the sole issue within the squad / system. However, he is part of a much larger problem under Emery and his useless management. For that I do have sympathy, but Xhaka’s past comments expose how unbelievably deluded he is, and the warped sense of his own ability. I doubt it will have shattered his own self-belief, but at least he is now unequivocally aware that the fans of his own club do not see him as some sort of top class midfielder.
One of the biggest gripes I’ve had in the last decade of watching Arsenal is the lack of mental strength throughout the squad. A response is what we all want to see. I doubt one will be forthcoming, but I put that more down to Emery than the players. Things will get worse but not for one second will I hold this one particular incident to blame. Fan discontent has been building for months now and it should not be a surprise that it eventually boiled over.
Almost every football player is subjected to some level of abuse on the pitch from opposing fans, and also on social media. Their owns fans booing one of their mates won’t break them or damage their egos anymore than what they have been through before. I doubt it will have any discernible impact at all because Emery is the root cause of our malaise right now, which is the most tragic thing about the situation.
It’s an unfortunate thing to have happened, but ultimately, if it accelerates Emery’s departure then I’ll look back on this in 12+ months with gratitude.
