George Graham

The fact it took an Arsenal legend to win spurs a trophy shows what a giving club we are. :grinning:

But for us as a player he won:
League title
FA Cup
European Fairs Cup

As a manager:
League title twice
FA Cup
League Cup twice
European Cup Winners Cup

Who has given more to the club than him?

I’ve said this many a times on this forum. I can appreciate what Graham won with the club. He was the manager when I started supporting Arsenal in the middle 80’s and took us to the next level.
He is however part of a dinosaur era of managers. A manager who cares more about players with grit and toughness, than skill and technique. He struggled badly when dealing with a lot of the European players coming in during the 90’s. He especially showed this during his Leeds tenure, where he lost the dressing room immediately and was described as a dictator.

The sports completely different now though surely.
The rules are totally different. Football evolves and Graham’s early teams were of a far more attacking level than what had gone before here. Wenger and PL money were able to develop in a new era.
Apart from Fergie who transcends both era’s it’s not really fair to put a dinosaur tag on him.
Liverpool 88 side stands comparison with Klopp teams according to some of their fan debates.
A season later he took a League title off them. Robust midfieds and strong defensive units were part of the game but there was flair in players like Rocastle and Merson and later Limpar.
Things certainly unravelled in the end but his overall standing is top tier management.

He also took over a very poor Arsenal team and built a squad, spending very little money and bringing through several players from the youth team who went on to play at the top level.

It’s true that Graham was renowned for having robust players who were physically and mentally tough but it’s also true that a lot of those players went on to win the title for Wenger.

It’s kind of funny in a way because when our robust player Partey went missing this season, we struggled big time.
Game evolves but somethings don’t change.

I think the dinosaur tag is pretty fair, depending by what you put into the word. He’s style was good for the period he was successful, but newer managers came in with fresh ideas. The same way one could call Wenger a dinosaur, since he failed to adapt in the later years. But I’m not taking anything away from him, his trophy record with us speaks for itself. But his style is old fashioned and that certainly didn’t work when dealing with players from other cultures.

Well yeah but foreign players coming in was in its infancy.
The club itself was learning like every other club how to use that market.
English football had a very insular outlook on that concept of the game.

That and the European cups ban too. Back then there was a bigger difference in approach to the game depending on country and culture. Many English/British managers adapted pretty good tbh, whilst some didn’t and instead complained about the import of players.

Meh, in your opinion. I have mine.

Explain your opinions ?
This is what makes football so great

True.

And he did well with Limpar while he was with us.

I’d love to see more of Georgie Graham on telly.

I explained it, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it :joy:

Not if you ask Limpar tbh.

Well

He and Wenger are the reason Arsenal are a big club in the modern PL era. We could easily have gone the way of Forest, Leeds or any other the other historically big clubs that now reside in the lower half of the table or lower divisions.
