It does seem bizarre that a government would make a decision like that, when it’s possible that people with severe depression could be helped, while psychopaths who commit evil crimes won’t stop.
Psychiatry is not an exact science, often just an opinion and a mistake could easily happen so any politician making a decision based on what a psychiatrist has said is risky to say the least.
With mental health and depression being so widely reported, especially among young people, what are the government going to do when they’re inundated with requests?
Without actually knowing the facts, I’d guess this is probably the majority view on the issue. Except probably when things like Lee Rigby or stories about grooming gangs or Josef bloody Fritzl become sensationalised in the press/social media - the support for the death penalty probably gains a temporary boost in the immediate aftermath of such stories breaking.
I am anti death penalty due to its finality and the very real existence of miscarriages of justice, but I also find the idea of executing profilic nonces to be quite appealling.
I think most people are concerned by both things (miscarriages of justice and dangerous, violent, irredeemable criminals being let out and harming people again) and I find it interesting to hear people explain how they balance these two competing issues and where they therefore fall on the issue of the death penalty.
Yes, western morality as it relates to death generally and state sanctioned “murder” is very skewed.
Just look at the excess civilian deaths in Gaza for example, people are right to point out that’s occurring with direct and indirect support from western nations. There’s no widespread outrages or an credible path to tangible change in govt policy for say the UK, Germany or the US.
Yet if criminal like Salman Abedi was subject to a death penalty for his crimes I bet there’s be widespread and credible opposition in parliaments to such a move.
I find it interesting a subject too. I find myself thinking about a idea which I first saw mentioned by Peter Hitchens and it’s that imprisoning someone is a more cruel punishment than the death penalty because it’s caging them - if for the more serious crime - for decades which has a profound affect on the minds of the institutionalised and robs them of their humanity.
Which I agree with but then couldn’t the death penalty be said to be a more final and absolute version of that? I find myself going around in circles in my own head with this as a topic. I find myself agreeing with the death penalty but then collapsing that belief somewhat and then re-affirming it somehow.
This is neither here nor there, but did you see what Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner had to say about Gaza?
"It’s terrible that people are dying but if the Israelis get rid of all the Palestinians in Gaza there’ll be tremendous money making opportunities in the real estate market for beach front property! "
I’m paraphrasing of course but that was the crux of it.
You don’t think these ghouls will kill off a few poors or ‘convince’ them it’s time to die so they can seize some of their assets, particularly if there is valuable real estate?
He’s actually such an odius fucking fat cunt that should be in jail.
Not content with causing thousands of Brits to die because of being a fucking moron, shit leader and shit person, now encouraging thousands of Palestinians to also die.
He has been a big part of the current unserious Britain in decline.
Should be prosecuted. In a just world he would be. Oh well, justice is coming for him. Him and his shit dad and both their shit hair.
That is fucked up that the officer was threatening to arrest him because being obviously Jewish would apparently be a breach of the peace in that context.
“Breach of the peace” is ridiculously open to interpretation.
I dont have an issue generally. We had a similar discussion re the funeral procession for lizzie.
To me its common sense policing to remove potentially antagonistic elements to maintain public order.
Theres always been typically “openly Jewish” people in the pro Palestine demos who never experience any issue despise wearing religious garbs or having signs.
The comment used and execution was poor but its a smart to keep pro Israeli agitators away for everybody’s sake.
