Gabriel Martinelli (11)

Martinelli fooled us with that 15 goal season man. Needs to be binned.

The thing is, it’s beyond clear Martinelli isn’t good enough, for a while, and everyone wants a new proper top LW.

Criticising Martinelli is almost pointless now. He’s gone as a starter, on a good way to lose his place in the club if he continues like this too.

On the other hand, I think Saka deserves a ton of criticism.
Fuck all the G+A he has so far. For one of our highest paid players (the highest?) and one of our biggest starts, he should be offering way more than he has done today.
Besides no end product he offered nothing in terms of making some difference with dribbling, drawing players to himself, releasing others. A Nelson level standard performance.

He’s starting to get compared to Thierry… Thierry couldn’t have a performance like this even sick, with a broken foot, during his prime years. That should stop. And it’s not like this is something surprising for Saka. He has plenty of performances like this throughout a season but is just absolutely immune to criticism for most and these just get ignored.

A supposed star like him should offer much more, even while the rest of the team is off, even while he is off himself.

It is kind of an impossible task to have him score 15 again.
He got found out and so difficult to get into scoring position.

I don’t think that’s true.

If anything the problem has been him having glaring opportunities and not finishing them. He’s more than capable of still getting behind the defence.

We are in 24-25 season, don’t live in the past.
If you don’t want to admit he is regressing, at least admit he is not improving either.

The only time he got wide open, were the times we forced turnover and had counter attack on fewer defenders.
In regular situations, we can see defenders opt not to challenge but just contain him instead.
He does not have time and space in the crowded box and not able to operate there.

I’m not sure you read a single word I said and just decided your own narrative there Ron.

I could go and find you least 5 times this season he’s been through on goal and fluffed it. One just this Wednesday against United.

He’s not regressed because teams have found him out. He’s regressed on finishing and in build up play, not getting chances. He’s also still making a fair few chances by cutting in and crossing well but we’re not always putting them away either.

He’s going to get it in the neck but overall I don’t think he can be blamed for the club not realising that he isn’t good enough and not addressing the elephant in the room

We need a big upgrade in quality in the position

Martinelli is a squad player who produced an outlier season, he has not improved and he lacks some fundamentals that means we are an unbalanced and less varied attack than we should be as a team that aims to win the title.

Martinelli hasn’t gotten found out, there just isn’t another level to his game and we should strongly consider if there even will be.

As I’ve said with my FM analogy.

Everyone fluffed chances, I won’t say he has regressed because he fluffed some chances.
Was he a clinical finisher? Never.

The crosses he put in are just random attempts.
Luck testing, low percentage.

An apt analogy

I think martinelli fluffs more than others, he gets in good spots and gets lost in his mind what to do.

In 22/23 everything came off because he was confident. I think he was always pretty limited on the ball and the key difference now is confidence that looks like it’s never coming back.

A shame but he’s at best a squad player and so is trossard.

Not even once have I seen anyone do that and I don’t think it’s common.

He does do this quite regularly though. He literally is that guy in our team, the guy who pulls out a goal or an assist out his arse when the team, and sometimes he himself, is playing shit. He basically did it today but had it cancelled out because Martinelli couldn’t just stay onside.

Besides, this is the Martinelli thread. Take all those paragraphs on Saka to that thread instead of responding to justified annoyance at Martinelli with this ā€œbut Sakaā€ stuff.

Remove Saka’s contribution and we would be worrying about qualifying for Europe right now.

Exactly, if we had a LW and striker the same quality of Saka, with Martinelli, Havertz or Jesus on the bench we would have the best attack in the PL.

Martinelli hasn’t been good but the problem is still the fact he’s not getting a lot of chances in a game. If he was playing in Liverpool’s attack for example, he’d have 6 or 7 goal.

Cala/Mick not playing is my last thing to hold onto for the guy. If we get this guys playing regularly and supporting the LW better then he has the platform to do his thing.

Martinelli should’ve been sent off here. Oops wrong thread

His best half in quite sone time I felt.
Having MLS behind him and Jesus rotating with him probably helped.
Monaco gave him more space than usual too.

This guy is genuinely utter dross. Everything he does frustrates me now he needs to be binned. It’s even worse now because we’re constantly playing against teams that sit deep so his useless jiggle of his shit feet does nothing.

Me and Stroller had this guy pegged years ago. Get him out.
