Gabriel Magalhães (6)

I would just point out that they’ve just kept a clean sheet in that half, can they really have been that bad?

Much clearer, thank you :joy:

Much worse than Gomez’s… Alisson played part of it with his positioning. This one was a perfect assist to Lingard

Yes.

It’s nonsense to suggest this guy should spend time on the bench. He’s an absolute physical monster with good passing range. Yeah, he has some brain farts in him but what’s the alternative? Drop him and move White back to CB? I don’t like that as White looks really good at RB.

Feel like some people just haven’t liked him for a while. Saliba had some sloppy moments today and had done quite a few times recently himself - but because he’s flavour of the month people ignore those moments.

Echo that.

Got no problems with Gabriel. He’s not in the Sol Campbell vein of defenders, but one of those who needs a run of games.

He’s a great defender not perfect yet but better than we’ve had for a while. I remember Tony Adams when he started out making stupid mistakes, he wasn’t called Donkey Adams without good reason :slightly_smiling_face:

When Adams was a teenager playing in the first team under Graham you’d hear the North Bank shouting “get rid of it,” when he had the ball but that’s why he became such a great defender, because he learned from his mistakes. :grinning:

Gabriel can be good for a number of games, quietly go about his business but any error is magnified disproportionately.

Saliba has been shaky the last few games as well but he’s the golden boy so gets loads of passes.

Got no problems with Gabriel. Lucky to have him

Gabriel has become a strange scapegoat recently which is odd as he didn’t start the only game we’ve lost this month.

He’s never going to win a popularity contest with Saliba.

One of Gabriel’s biggest strengths imo is that he plays just about on the edge of controlled with his emotions. As a super emotional guy myself, I think that’s a real skill.

Does he make mistakes? Yes, but all CBs make mistakes. The question is whether he is the best partner for Saliba. Are they, to borrow a metaphor from one of my favorite so-bad-it’s-good movies “drift compatible”? I think they are, especially when we can keep White at RB who is just so goddamn good at the moment.

I would quibble with your post when you say he’s got a good passing range. I think his passing is excellent and he’s definitely got room to grow too. He could learn how to hit that Xhaka-esque wedge pass.

Said it in the past but while Saliba is a very good ball carrier, Gabriel is the better passer.
So many of our attacks start from him cutting through the opposition’s midfield and getting us into the final third.

Him and Saliba were incredible.

I think this is our best CB partnership since 2004

Can’t hate this guy even when he makes mistakes, such a likeable guy and a goal threat on set pieces.

The thing I will remember was Saliba dancing on the touchline, and playing as a winger

Lovely

Deserved redemption after a tough few big games.

With him and Billy Saliba I dont feel worried about aerial attacks from the opposition in the way we’ve become accustomed to over the last 10+ years.
