Maybe, but if we’re trying to play like City or at least a version of City this still doesn’t make sense to me. Pep has just spent the last two years chasing a bigger more target-ish striker to play forward (first Kane and now Haaland). If Arteta was instrumental in helping Pep shape the way City play, why aren’t we also looking for a similar body type in a forward?
Basically like all good coaches Pep is evolving his tactics and team.
Does it regularly but people don’t acknowledge it and just quote money.
Your overall point stands though. I don’t think Arteta influenced his tactics fundamentally. That’s not even a criticism either.
He’s carried Everton on his back, is amazing at starting the press, can (and does) play across the forward line and 13 goals would have made him our top scorer this season.
He’s quality. His personality would be my only worry about him joining. Richarlison could be in the matchday 16 for most top clubs in Europe.
Much easier to evolve your tactics with unlimited funds. Just sayin.
I agree, Sterling is way ahead in terms of ability and how much difference he could make to our first team.
But realistically, he isn’t coming here unless we pay him Ozil level wages, which won’t happen either.
So a more attainable player would be Richarlison and I think he could do well here.
There’s not a lot of attacking talent out there and proven top players will want CL football and to be challenging for the PL title, which is something we can’t offer so we’ll have to take what we can get.
Are you thinking Richardson and a CF, or just with Eddie? The latter is kind of ok if you are going to fork out 50-60m on a signing, but my feel is if you want this signing and still another CF this signing might be restricted to around 20-30m. If this signing is jut to join Eddie, I don’t feel Richarlison is right as the signing.
I’m not convinced Richarlison is the right fit for Arsenal. Too many disciplinary issues and red cards, plus the price would eat into our transfer fund. Gabriel Jesus, plus Gnabry would cost less in terms of transfer fees and would be a strong attacking lineup.
Richarlison and Jesus would be perfect for me. I love the idea of Sterling to Arsenal (sadly he doesn’t seem to!) and Gnabry is an excellent winger but only a winger.
The ability of Jesus and Richarlison to play across the front line excites me to be honest and I think both would be highly motivated. Gnabry and Sterling may (rightly) think they’re above playing here and I could see a performance and output dip.
Jesus seems a very likely addition. I think we’ll add a forward but doubt it will be a big name. We won’t sign Richarlison because Marquinos, Jesus, Martinelli and Richard Arlison would be carnival season and Mikel doesn’t like fun.
Gabriel Jesus does have some pull from Arsenal because of the combo of experience with Arteta as well as a Brazilian contingent at the club. I do sometimes get a bit worried about cliques and so the contingent shouldn’t grow too large, which is what you reminded me there, wrt. Richarlison.
Personally I don’t rate Richarlison highly, there are some parallels with Rashford in terms of thinking about it, in that I would only sign him if cut price and spreading risk by covering for if he doesn’t do well with someone else. Again, the chances look slim on just reading the tea leaves.
Fuck Richarlison.
I was thinking of Richarlison and Jesus but that won’t happen.
He played upfront when DCL was injured and did a decent job so it’s possible he could do the same for us.
Would Arteta be so interested in Jesus if he was playing for Everton rather Man City?
I doubt he’d give him a second look because he isn’t a prolific goal scorer.
But if Richarlison was playing at Man City with KDB, Sterling, Foden, Beranado, Mahrez, etc, he’d be getting more than twenty goals a season.
Who is better, Gabriel Jesus or Richarlison is genuinely debatable, but if we’re forking so much for Gabriel Jesus it is really because Arteta is manager and sort of unquestionable Dictator right now, has coaching familiarity with the player, likes the player, and it is therefore all driven by him, which in an ideal world would bring some accountability on the back end depending on how the signing turns out, although that isn’t something that always happens at Arsenal. I’m reluctant to go with Richarlison mainly because of personality, and sometimes edgy personalities can be good, but I don’t think so in his case.
Gabriel Jesus all day long
He could at the very least get as many goals as him playing the same minutes and his general play is light years better
Richarlison on the ball isn’t pretty, about as crap as his haircuts
You cant underestimate the football education and winning ethos under Pep brings either.
Also the EPO. Can’t forget about that.
Any concerns over his height? There has sort of been tradition over the last ten or so years for someone of this build getting isolated as a CF in the Arsenal system.
He’s isn’t a DCL or Toney in the air but he’s pretty good, has a good leap too. I wouldn’t worry about it.
Height is overrated in the Premier League. The last three world class strikers that this league has seen in Aguero, Suarez and Kane (he is over 6 foot to be fair) are hardly physical monsters or great in the air.
Granted, Jesus is shorter than all 3, but can’t see it being an issue simply because Jesus is good technically.
Kane is fantastic in the air
Kane’s hold up play is incredible. Wouldn’t describe him as great in the air though.
