Emiliano Martinez

I’d struggled to name 3 international goalkeepers who have had the impact he’s had on winning.

That last-minute save from Kolo Moani will be cemented in folklore. 50% of the 24 penalties he’s faced for Argentina have been missed.

I think that Kolo Muani save will go down as one of the most iconic goalkeeping moments in the sports history.

The story behind it, the magnitude of the game, the time in the match it happened and the save itself.

Im not doubting that I’m questioning Flexo’s statement that he’ll go down as one of the greatest international goalkeepers “ever”.

I’m sure you know as well as I do due to our knowledge of football “back in the day” this is a huge exaggeration. You only have to look at his career prior to 2020 and he’s 31

When you look through history you’d struggle to name too many goalkeepers with as important an impact on their teams fortunes as him.

3 consecutive major tournament wins and he was massive in all of them.

Yes but he’ll never be considered one of the greatest ever he needs to be consistent which he isn’t.
For 8 years he hardly ever played for Arsenal or his loan clubs, I just think he’s hit a purple patch, don’t get me wrong I love the guy I like his attitude, but to put him in the same conversation of some of the world’s greatest goalkeepers ever, no chance.

He’s outrageously consistent at international level?

I’d struggle to name more than a few goalkeepers who’ve had as much success and has as many iconic moments as he has for Argentina.

2x Copa America
1x WC

And he was named goalkeeper of the tournament in all 3 of them.

3 years, 45 caps, 3 major trophies (meaning an average of 1 major trophy every 15 games for Argentina), all the important international goalkeeper awards.

thanks to the downfall of Brazil…

Argentina had some easy rides in the two Copa…

But that is still not my point, I’m referring to Flexo’s statement
Where do you think he rates in amongst all the world greatest goalkeepers ever because if you are taking Emi’s international trophy haul as the standard ( if that’s the word?) then he’s a better goalkeeper than Buffon!

The one that got away :frowning:

Flexo didn’t rank him as one of the greatest goalkeepers ever just one of the greatest when looking solely at international career. I think it’s a very fair statement

I got the 97 rating Martinez, see if he can live up to the hype.

Thrives under pressure.

My understanding is that Fillol is basically the consensus greatest Argentina keeper but I think that title quite comfortably lies with Martinez now. Crazy to think that in 47 games he’s won 3 major trophies, 1 “supercup” and has been named goalkeeper of the tournament at every major tournament he’s played for Argentina.

Iconic in game saves, penalty kick specialist and could retire tomorrow with a huge legacy in place.

As much as I like Raya, it does seem strange that Martinez was sold so quickly.

It was definitely the right decision at the time and I think long term it’s worked out well for all parties. Martinez has managed to establish himself as one of Villa’s great goalkeepers and Argentina’s greatest goalkeeprs and we got a nice fee for him (at the time anyway).

Raya is in my eyes the best we’ve had between the sticks since Lehmann.

So it’s been a good move for everyone involved. I have no issues with it. Raya suits us a lot more than Emi would have suited what Arteta wanted.

Inaki Cana probably didn’t like the cut of Emi’s jib. Few do…
