Emiliano Martinez

always been a decent back up but never good enough to be out first choice, maybe for someone else but not us

Have you been watching the games?

well he’s not as good as Leno and at the time you was saying he should be first choice he wasn’t better then Chesney either

:+1:.

He’s right though.

This praise is over the top. I’d still rather have Leno. And I’d definitely rather have Szczęsny. Yes he’s done fine, but it’s a small sample size, and so far he hasn’t done anything that outstanding.

People going well over the top, but I’ll admit he’s a very solid backup keeper.

happy to have him as a backup because he doesn’t seem to mind that role, been number 2 for years and never tried to leave

Yeah, I always wonder about the mindset of a no2 goalkeeper. If you’re at the tail end of your career, fine, understandable. But the younger ones that just spend all their prime years sitting on the bench… Do they have no ambition?

he’s still kind of young for a keeper as well, sometimes being comfortable and happy might take over ambition

@Phoebica just had a look and in 11 years at arsenal he’s played 29 times

9, my maths was bad

Old-school keeper mindset. Many keepers used to wait till their mid-twenties or even their late twenties to get their chance.
Let’s not forget, there’s only one spot for a keeper in an XI, tough career.

Not likely to.

What if the money as number 2 at Arsenal is equal or better than being a starting player at lower placed PL teams or the Championship? At the end of the day it’s all about the money as professionals.

This isn’t true, money doesn’t equal happiness necessarily. I reckon there’d be plenty of guys who would take less to play with Norwich as a #1 keeper than sit on the bench at Arsenal and hardly ever play.

True, but it also works the other way…As an Arsenal supporter I would much rather be no.2 at my club, than be a no.1 at a smaller club, and so long as the money was decent, I would be happy with that…

There’s quite a few who have made a career out of it though.

Stuart Taylor.
Steve Harper.
Alex Manninger.
Carlo Nash.
Albert Jorquera.
Thomas N’Kono.
Joseph A Bell.
Ross Turnbull.
Brad Jones.
Tony Warner.
Richard Wright.

If you go back far enough in this thread I’m sure you’ll find me questioning someone praising him, asking what it is they’ve seen in him and when.

I’m seeing it now. The way I’m feeling right now is I’d be sorely disappointed if he left, looking like a capable number 2.

You’ll jinx it. Never praise a goalkeeper during a match.
