I expect it is because they depreciate the player over the length of the contract and in a perfect world, the expense (fee) occurs over the same period. When you have a higher cost up front it will impact short term FFP more than spreading it

The reason we’re willing to pay this much is because he can do a lot more than just defend and keep possession. Very capable of driving us up the pitch and chipping in with important goals.
If we are wrong I would gladly accept an Odegaard transfer request out of nowhere as punishment.
