The current crop excite me more tbh seems to be more balance, particularly in the midfield.

Oh I wasn’t contesting whether you like the current squad more or not. Just the ‘how are we not winning everything’ is familiar territory.

For what it’s worth my input I don’t think the current generation is better (yet) but are more capable of working together and thus perform better in tournaments. Players like Kane have a better mentality while Rooney for example was prone to moaning and sulking.

It’ll be a national disgrace if we don’t win euro 2024

Isn’t it kind of England’s thing to overhype and then underachieve?

The current England is miles better than the ‘golden generation’. I’m not even a fan of the national team, so my biases are non-existant.

Robinson, Neville, Hargreaves and J.Cole are well below par, compared to Pope, Walker, Rice, Grealish.

The only thing that England team was good at was bombing down flanks, long balls and set pieces.

Zero creativity, no flair.

Saka, Kane, Foden, Bellingham are world beaters. Think this is the first time England has had several world class players at the same time for a long time.

Foden/Saka aren’t there yet, but they’re on the right trajectory.

Don’t worry, compatriot, we’re winning one of the next three tournaments.

And it wasn’t when England lost the final at Wembley on penalties?

This is said every tournament and every tournament England fluffs it. England isn’t entitled to winning these tournaments lol

England won’t win anything with Southgate as the manager. He’s not got “it”

Saka and Maddison in our attack or Saka and Havertz?

Did Otto Rehhagel have “it”?

Dunno who that is. Southgate isn’t a winner. He’s got no tactical nous. England have took the lead in a world cup semi final and European final and ended up losing still. Any good manager wins them two games

He did

Werder Bremen

Definitely had WAY more success than Fraudgate as a manager…

England needed a good coach. That much talent and I don’t remember a good playing style.

Perhaps, but maybe not. We had Capello once, he did fuck all. Now perhaps he didn’t have as good a squad as Southgate, or was up against a higher level of competition, but the reality is that no England manager apart from Alf Ramsey can claim a better tournament record than Southgate (winning in 66 and reaching the semis in 70)

I wouldn’t be against upgrading Southgate, and I think if he fails to win the next tournament we should roll the dice and try to be ambitious and bring in someone who can go a step further. At that stage I think it would be fair to say that Southgate had had a fair shot and taken us as far as he could.

But after shit like getting knocked out by fucking Iceland the tournament before he took over, I find it hard as an England fan to hear people be too highly critical of Southgate. I’ve much preferred watching the tournaments we’ve featured in under him than the majority of managers we’ve had in my lifetime.

That’s fair. Outsiders don’t maybe think about how good the journey is along the way

There was also no cohesion in that squad, (which is what Gareth has actually done well - similar to what Ole managed at Utd). There have been many comments later on about how the the club rivalries carried over into the England squad.

The Kaiserslauten Bundesliga win is very impressive for sure. Nothing against him specifically, I just had a feeling @Calum wouldn’t be too familiar with him and Greece is a good example of how tournaments can often be in terms of it being a case of a few good games making the difference between success and being forgotten about.

I’m not a huge Southgate fan by any means but I don’t think we should simplify things too much either. In the case of Euro 2020, they were a game away from changing the narrative completely. At the same time, does making it all about Southgate not also kinda trivialise Mancini and the Italy performance?

It will be interesting to see how many top clubs will be clamouring to sign Southgate when he leaves.
Certainly not any that want to play entertaining football.
