Yeah I really enjoyed it! It did feel like they were just getting to the next (or full ) gear when it ended, but I enjoyed it.
I did like that it was just a brawl and them killing each other in a cage instead of being plunder filled with loads of deadly spots.
I was gutted bout the result, but that return was awesome.
That blade job Joe did was absolutely gnarly though, dude looked like a maniac.
Itâs a bit selfish of me because I like Joe, so putting the title on him is a from me.
I do think Adam Page was made to look like a complete geek in the process though.
Kinda wastes all that build and coronation earlier in the year.
My suspicion is that business is alarmingly down(especially with WBDâs future up in the air) and TK had to do shake things up somehow. Would explain the appearance on Helwani too and the willingness to answer some tough questions to create some headlines.
Canât watch anything from this time period without being angry at how badly this was booked.
Even if you left the nWo lot at home⌠DDP, Booker T, Steiner, Goldberg and one of the ex-WCW lot (Big Show makes the most sense in my eyes) would have made this match 20x better in star power.
I know we dredge this topic up a million times but man..
Austin, Rock, Taker, Kane and Angle vs Steiner, Goldberg, DDP, Booker T and Big Show
I know Sting had no interest in coming after how badly they buried The Rock buried Booker T and Flair was obviously no longer seen as a top guy. But DDP got a ridiculous pop on his debut instead of being a fucking stalker he could have been a real major player.
Yeah the contractual situation made it difficult, but they should have paid for at least one of the top WCW guys. Goldberg would have been the big one I think, because he was a pure WCW product with no WWF connection - as was the case with Booker T and DDP.
I wouldnât be surprised if they wanted it back on Swerve but didnât want to do Hangman/Swerve just yet with them both being mega faces more than anything.
The most underwhelming part of it for me was it being Hook that screwed Hangman over he does absolutely nothing for me and is aggressively mediocre.
It does suck how the second reign went though. It was never going to reach the heights of the chase, which is some of the best work the company has ever done, but it feels like they didnât really try.
Badly booked from the fans perspective. I donât think Vince McMahon. At that time at least. Had any intention of putting WCW stars over any of his guys. They managed to kill DDPâs star power in 5 minutes with that gimmick FFS that was intentional.
Iâm not sure why he went through with it. I mean this goes back to the McMahon vs McMahon feud at Wrestlemania but they couldâve cooled the brakes right there after that match. I think they panicked after HHH got injured and Rock was still away. They needed a main angle quickly.
The biggest problem was the McMahon feud surrounding it, it was so done to death by that point and Stephanie and Shane wasnât that interesting. Stephanie being ECW owner was so ridiculous with Paul Heyman there.
Btw Scott Steiner said in an interview that he was pitched the idea of teaming with Austin to take on Nash / Hall at Mania 18 but wasnât happy with the $$ that was offered so he sat out the rest of his WCW deal.
Looking back at Mania 18, it would have made much more sense for Austin to feud with Flair than for him to go against Hall. The feud with Hall was pointless and weak and didnât make any sense. Just felt like a filler feud to keep Austin on the Mania card.
I genuinely think you could have drawn good money at Mania 18 putting in Austin against Flair and Hogan against Rock. Youâve got probably the 4 biggest stars of the 80s and 90s facing off.
Not a surprise Austin was so pissed by this point the plan was to have Hall go over Austin at Mania anyway which makes no sense.
Excellent points. I would say one thing that Austin / Hall feud did give us was the Austin / Rock Vs nWo match that was one of my favourite Raw matches.
On the one hand, there is a good side - WWE takes much better care of its talent than it did in the early 2000s. When you look at the 2000s list you see almost uniformly wrestlers who had massive interruptions or curtailments of their career through injury and that doesnât seem to happen so much anymore now that wrestlers arent doing TV twice a week and wrestling 3 house shows in addition and thatâs positive.
But bloody hell they need better succession planning. Literally been watching the same main events for ten years at this point.
