Bret Hart Was Quite Good

Bob Backlund is the ultimate short reign champion. The entire build up to him taking that title, the way it happened with Owens involvement and the absolute squash he took on a house show to drop it. Incredible.

It still pisses me off that Backlash 2000 wasn’t the WM 2000 main event. Would have literally been one of the all time great Mania main events.

Indeed. And within a month or so it meant nothing.

I’m not sure it killed the moment, maybe the momentum for sure. But it’s very memorable.

It just needed to be at Wrestlemania (Vince heel turn made no sense and thus the story around the Main Event was bleh) but I liked something incredible like that could happen at Backlash.

Memorable but a bit tainted. Like what the fuck was the point in Rock losing it again only to win it back in, of all things, a six man tag by pinning Vince?

Nah, that was pure dog shit and the kind of thing the attitude era gets a free pass on all too often.

I think we disagree whether what happened at JD/KOTR 2000 tainting what happened at Backlash.

KOTR 2000 and beyond was very strange, Undertaker/Kane/Benoit was a strange feud all around. With the exception of Summerslam 2000 (which didn’t involve those guys). There was a lot of strange finishes for The Rock. I think it was Unforgiven that Kane was stopping Undertaker from breaking up The Rock’s pin. Random shit like that. The match also got restarted? Which really was weird also.

Tbf that judgement day match and that whole Rock Vs Tiple H feud that year was great.

When stone colds music hit I went crazy iirc

Yeah I think it’s fair to say we don’t see Backlash the same way even if it is a great individual moment

I think the trajectory of Rock’s run with the title, which was definitely too short was set by that nonsense that preceded it from Mania to KOTR. Overbooked and just a bit crap really.

I mean, that match was possibly the worst booked of the lot.

The returning Undertaker making a big babyface entrance in his new persona handing the title to Triple H by DQ.

Nice one :joy:

That Judgement Day match is very hit and miss for me. Undertaker makes a big return to save The Rock by…costing him the title? The Rock makes a big comeback to tie the score for that to happen?

Na, that’s a screwy finish people would’ve destroyed WCW for. They were overcomplicating it for the drama.

Not to mention they could’ve used that match to end the feud instead of at KOTR.

NGL trying to catch up on RAW from last night and this top billing ‘rivalry’ of Cody Rhodes v Gunther is drier than a menopausal vagina.

No personality from either of them and this whole wrestlers in suits thing should’ve stopped with Triple H.

Remind me again, what’s your exposure to wrestling?
Relapsed fan or just a casual fan diving into it now?

After about 10 years off (odd highlight when the rock appears aside).

Gave up during the Cena era, liked him for a while but got bored of him being the face of the show.

So, it’s a bit awkward because this Cody v Gunther feud is a bit of a filler to be honest with you.
It’s essentially a bragging rights match so the stakes aren’t big and Cody is already feeding with someone else on Smackdown.

It’s a short build to Crown Jewel in Saudi, things will pick up right after when they build towards Survivor Series.

Yeah, I thought it was all right.

There was a massive lull with the 2 out of 3 falls match and the tag titles match  it was literally “piss break” territory.

Really liked the MJF/Garcia/Adam Cole segment.

Opening match was very good, I thought. Sometimes the simpler, the better. I can recall Drew McIntyre suplexing CM Punk through a table at Bad Blood recently, for example, and it’s spots like that that are enough to make the fans stand up and take notice. Spots that aren’t spots, ironically.

WWE Youtube showing Halloween Havoc 1998

If anyone wants to see the disaster match of Hogan vs Warrior soon :joy:

This PPV really sums up WCW 1998, card is stacked to fuck but good ideas let down by booking.

Still, one of my favourite PPV sets.

@SRCJJ’s Boy Scott Steiner on right now.

Was that when Goldberg had that huge streak pop? His entrance being unreal?

Aye it was.

His match with DDP was great but WCW fucked this up by running overtime that they had to show it on the next Nitro, most folks that bought the PPV didn’t even see the match.
