Boxing

Yeah I also agree but for the general public (aka the market that really matters for most sports), the name brand is often more important than the absolute quality of the competitors.

It’s not as though most people can accurately construe the relative level of skill of fighters in most situations anyway (outside of perhaps a complete amateur vs a highly skilled professional).

Fight sports have this perceived prestige attached to them but at the end of the day, it’s entertainment and the market decides what that is and it isn’t always based on factors that represent a true reflection of the core values of the sport (which are also up for debate as well).

I mean, for me, boxing isn’t even real fighting anyway because its basically useless againat anyone who can wrestle or kick.

So if I applied my values, then even the top boxing guys facing off to be called the “Baddest man on the planet” would be a farce because those same guys would be destroyed against a very large number of MMA guys/kickboxing guys, probably even some Judo and Jiu Jitsu guys. But, as above, that isn’t how entertainment works.

From what I’ve read on here and on instagram though I’m not sure this is true of last night.

Seems to be trending that way for every sport not just boxing, true entertainment and skill are both dwindling in favour of a ‘show’ and stat records.

It was certainly entertaining watching Jake Paul get punched in the face.

I’ve always said if you know how to box and wrestle you’ll basically beat most people in a street fight. But if you only know how to do one then wrestling will always mean more because most street fights end up in a grapple of on the floor.

As a fight night layman, I love reading boxing and mma fans discussing which set of fighters would win (not that you two are arguing that point)

Sure, the fight was crap but the entertainment doesn’t always come directly from the fight. A big part of it is the name Jake Paul carries and the potential for him to get hurt, which people tune in for.

Which happened. I dread to think of the outcome had he stood toe to toe with AJ.

Wondering if this will be a wrap for Jake Paul.
You could excuse the loss but he was made to look silly.

Reckon he’ll do one more where he’s likely to win and then go out. I see him following his brother in the WWE after which is bad news for us wrestling fans.

Not a chance. Despite the loss, he didn’t get brutally knocked out against a much bigger guy. He has plenty of scope for more fights.

His whole thing was that he was able to act tough and say he’s a serious boxer.
The guy was saying his goal was to go the next Olympics(lmao).

The fight was a mismatch but I’m not sure who he fights next. He’ll duck any serious boxer because back to back loss would be devastating to his stock. His next fight will definitely be some jobber he knows he’ll beat.

Except that everyone knows he isn’t an elite boxer. He fought a massive heavyweight guy and lost but it wasn’t a brutal KO so in some worlds that actually does a lot for his reputation.

There are plenty of guys he could fight from here.

Without getting into this too much, it shouldn’t even be a debate lol I actually like boxing but most of the stuff boxers do is completely useless in a different ruleset. A lot of the close-quarters defensive work is useless when your opponent can grab you for example.

There is obviously always a chance that a boxer lands a shot while standing but then what do they do about a kick? One kick will legitimately end the fight immediately as boxers legs aren’t conditioned for that kind of contact.

There’s a reason other than money that we never see boxers in MMA and it’s because it wouldn’t be anywhere close to worth watching because at least in boxing an MMA guy can make the fight look somewhat competitive. Conor could have easily had Floyd out of there inside 30 seconds if they fought MMA.

The MMA-round. Obviously Rodtang is a Muay Thai fighter and not a boxer, but this is what will happen every single time MMA-rules will apply. Every stand up fighter (boxer, kickboxer etc) will be taken down and choked out. The boxers/kickboxers who are saying this will not happen are lying to themselves.

This was such a great spectacle. It’s so fascinating seeing the instant difference in approach as soon as Rodtang had to worry about the takedown.

I used to hate sparring at boxing gyms for this reason lol their guys would just walk forward the whole time and I obviously wasn’t allowed to use most of my skillset and I’m just standing there getting pounded on and thinking how I’d love to just drag them to the ground and hit and a head and arm choke and be done with it lol

AJ involved in serious car crash where two passengers died. Apparently escaped with minor injuries

Just seen the state of the car and casualties, absolute horrific car crash. AJ is VERY lucky to survive.

Just seen some horrible footage of the crash. RIP. Awful what bad driving causes.

Shocking.

Front of the car absolutely mangled, don’t think whoever was sitting there stood much chance of survival.

Assume we don’t know, but was AJ driving?

He’s been photographed in the back of the vehicle shortly after the incident.

The two in the front (both deceased) are believed to be foreign nationals - I’m guessing that means Nigerian.
