Like Villa?
i am not understanding what is being seen with this transfer. How many bloody defenders do we need at least try saliba before pushing him out of the door. Why are we wasting more money on centre backs soon we will only have them for the whole bloody squad.
Press Association ¶ is the national news agency for the UK and Ireland and a leading multimedia content provider.
Didnāt Arteta say heās very creative person? Maybe he wants to pull a Pep and try to invent new system that utilizes 5 CBs.
In what world is Ben White worth £40m?
And then for Brighton to reject that bid?
And then for Arsenal to bid higher?
This gets even more preposterous with every development. Pure what the fuckery
What is Artetaās obsession with center backs?
Saliba must have really said something nasty to not be able to get onto Artetaās CB love wagon
£40m seems like too much but its certainly in the ballpark. Leeds had a £25m bid rejected last summer and that was at the height of the Covid situation and before he actually played a full season in the Premier League and impressed.
CBs are just expensive when selling within the Premier League. Fairly mediocre players like Mings, Webster, and Keane have moved for around £20-25m in recent years, there were rumors of £30-35m bids for Tarkowski and Dunk the last couple years, Ake cost £41m last season, and Maguire cost £80m at the top of the market.
We seem destined to overpay but maybe not by that much when you really look at it.
How can such a twitter transfer news aficionado not have heard of the Press Association?!
Your position as OAās Transfer King is not immediately under threat, but thatās a definite wobble.
āWtf the fuck is juice? N****a thatās drink! Purple, sugar, water!ā thought this Dave Chappelle quote would be relevant to that.
Heard of Associated Press, never heard of press association though.
Wow 40 million quid rejected is just wild. Seems that Saliba wonāt be here and we know Holding is average so Arteta must simply think White is our guy.
Artetaball lets gooo
This is getting silly now. Arteta isnāt starting Saliba.
So just to provide some balanceā¦and leaving aside the fact that Brighton have rejected our Ā£40m bid (which is mad)ā¦in terms of our interest and rumoured bid for Ben White (and for the record I realise that I am leaving myself open to ridicule by saying this)ā¦perhaps, just perhaps, this could be a sign that Arsenal do have money to spend and we are looking to overhaul the squad this summer.
So before I am shouted down, hereās my thought processā¦
We could all argue about our priority this summer and which position we should strengthen first as a priority i.e. Central Midfielder, Attacking Midfielder, Right Back or back-up Left Back. However, I think the vast majority of us would all agree that a new CB is not a priority.
So with this in mind, are we in fact seeing us progressing a deal for Ben White, and will then look to still strengthen in the aforementioned areas this summer?
I still have faith in Arteta and Edu and I will stand firm in my view for the moment. I will reflect after the close of the transfer window and after next season, but I still think we have a big summer of signings and transfer activity ahead.
I also wonder whether they have identified Ben White as a future star and starter for England and are seeking to sign him now before he establishes himself aka Harry Maguire where we would then be forced to pay £80m for a start CB. Ben White is young and has a lot of potential. Buying a good group of younger players that could develop into world class stars is probably the best way that we can seriously mount a PL title challenge in the short-medium term. So if this is our transfer approach, I support it as a way forward.
This is one of the best and most positive posts Iāve seen in this forum. I share your opinions.
Chuffed with that! I do like to try to be positiveā¦
Hope youāre right man.
I understand what youāre saying and, if we sell a few of our CBās to pay for White, it does mean that a CB partnership of him and Gabriel could be better than what we have.
Before every window we hear the manager and the board say how itās going to be different but our transfer dealings are always notoriously inadequate and shambolic.
We need to spend at least 150m on a top quality AM, CM and RB, as well as cover for Tierney and possibly two GKās, before we need to sign yet another CB which, if we did buy White, would take our spending up to around 200m.
The players we need arenāt luxury signings, they are what we have needed for too long and are essential for us to keep up with our rivals and challenge for a top six place.
We also need to get rid of at least eight under performing, high earning players to help pay for them and this is never going to happen because despite promises before, it never does.
The club lie to supporters constantly about being big and ambitious but theyāre clearly not, itās just talk, which is something that they do excel at.
It doesnāt matter how much Arteta wants these players, heās an average manager so even if he does get the players he wants, he is not the man to do anything with them.
I hope youāre right and I admire your trust in the board and Arteta but I just donāt see it happening because they have let us down too many times before.
Itās on his partner then for confirmation of a few cms.
I think they found a good player in Gabriel so if theyāve looked here and think theyāve found a player Iām not going to dismiss it because the few times I saw Brighton I wasnāt really paying attention to him. It seems a random choice to come from nowhere but maybe heās the one, Iāve no idea so canāt say he is/isnāt worth a given fee.
Weāre also very low on the homegrown side of things, especially if Bellerin leaves.
My only worry here is that weāve got Pepās apprentice and maybe he thinks all our problems are that we arenāt playing out from the back well enough, which is why we are supposedly after a CB and GK so publicly.
To be fair, my biggest gripes with this team are Xhaka and Bellerin frustrate me and it sounds like they may be addressed this window anyway, so maybe itās not too crazy to try and improve other areas for the long term.
What makes this window different to others is weāll probably make some sales, so every 40m player is likely to be offset by a 20m sale, so a 120m spend is probably not beyond our reach if we can make say 60m of sales.
