Benjamin White (4)

I honestly thought he was dog piss in his first year he just looked like a total clown and then the whole summer in Greece incident happened and it looked like he was finished. Totally turned his form around and was a rock for a lot of last season and easily the second best defender at the Euros. Props to him for what he did that can’t be easy.

Admittedly I may have overstated how shot he was largely to fuel my own agenda

He was tbf, he’s not the first decent player to look like a clown playing in the circus that is modern Manchester United lol

It’ll be interesting to see how Maguire does this year.

Both United and England have used systems that play to his strengths but cover his weaknesses. He has two ball winning CM/DM types in front of him and relatively defensive fullbacks on either flank, so all he has to do is use his strong ball skills in possession and defensively hold his position and dominate in the air. Never has to deal with runners coming right at him, rarely has to cover the space behind his fullback in the channel, almost never has to sprint backward to his own goal while dealing with a 2 v 2 or 3 v 3 situation.

I think he would struggle if you put him in Liverpool or City’s system with more players pushed forward, fewer covering, and a higher line. But Ole is going to feel pressure to play more in that aggressive way this year so we will see.

What?

Don’t get me wrong, I love God’s Only Son, but idk that I’d spend £50m on a guy because he likes him.

We have no scouts so fuck it why not just ask players on international duty about our transfer targets. I’m sure that couldn’t go wrong, good enough for me spend the 50m :joy::joy:

It’s not only because of that. But it’s natural for the club to ask people around the camp about potential targets.

Haha, I read shit like that and just go ah it’s Twitter crap.

But I remember we fired our scouts and alot of backroom staff, Arteta and Edu are brain dead. It wouldn’t actually surprise me.

Not sure what serious insight Saka could have offered tbh

“Yeah he’s a good lad” is the extent of Saka’s view on white lol

Gotta share my two cents on the transfer…

First of all I haven’t watched a minute of him on the pitch, so I shouldn’t be writing, but who cares…

For me, you can see this either as a very illogical move from one position, or as a very ballsy, brave one, from the other.

Not many people highlighted this… And, I have to say, I’m optimistic and open minded about him, and as far as I’m concerned he could be the best CB in the league in a couple of years… But… Everybody obviously sees him as a CB… But, according to my knowledge, he only played like a handful of games as a CB.

HUGE gamble. I’d love it to go the best possible way, and I always love when we used to discover unkown players before ofthers… But giving away a large chunk of our transfer budged on a player who hasn’t really established himself at a certain role/position is a very OPTIMISTIC move.

He has to be among the best defenders in the league in a few years or this is a waste of money and time.

Not trying to be negative, just describing the situation from my point of view. No pressurre.

They played defensive football that year but they did only concede 36 goals which is only 3 more than the best defence, he did make mistakes I understand your view with it, i mean didn’t laca make absolute mince meat of him that season which was embarrassing lol. I just loved him for Leicester whenever I saw him.

He played as a CB during his loan at Leeds (one of two CBs), but at Brighton he played as a RCB (one of three CBs). He can definately play alongside Gabriel as a CB. Both are similar ages and both are good ball playing CB that are able to pass out and progress the ball from the back. His interception stats are good. His only weakness at the moment seems to be in the air, but maybe that’s where Gabriel can step in.

I am very optimistic, but I do agree with you that it could turn out to be a gamble given the fee paid. I am pleased however that given he was a top target for Arteta and Edu that the club have got this deal over the line with Brighton for a player that they didn’t really want to sell. There have been plenty of occasions in the past where we haven’t been willing to pay the extra fee and we have ended up missing out.

Spend and spend wise.
At least we spend this time, and don’t know if this is a good transfer. Can’t tell till he actually play.

At least we spend… better than not doing anything or missing out because of peanuts.

Not shitting on the kid, I hope he hits but there’s question marks over defensive awareness and ability to organise at Arsenal’s level, he was sheltered by two experienced CB at BHA to some extent.

At the end of the day top level need CBs match up well with the league’s best forwards, I think White has the tools to do that. I’m very curious to see how he gets on

I just hope it doesn’t mean three at the back under Arteta. If it does I’m just phoning this season in as another wash.

While I fully respect everyone’s option on this site, including yours, I have to say that your post is simply
delusional and the constant negativity is getting really boring. In every post you make under each thread you have a dig at Arteta. I get you don’t like him and want Arsenal and Arteta to fail, but please just give it a rest. As for the Ben White transfer, just give the lad a chance. None of us have seen him play for Arsenal yet. He is 23, still at the start of his career and has bags of potential. We should all be pleased that we are signing good young talented players and should be getting behind the team. All the reports about him are positive, so let’s just give him a chance rather than hoping he fails.

As for our other transfers to date, I think Lokonga looks like an absolute baller, based on what I have seen. He could be an excellent addition to our midfield and a snip at £17m. Tavares also looks decent. Early days but looks good going forward. Maybe some more work defending, but that can be worked on.

More deals to come and happy with the transfers made to date by Arteta and Edu. I will reserve judgement until the end of the window.

I’ve not ever really said anything negative about the player himself. In fact I said he will probably be very good for us because of the park the bus tactics we use. Arteta has been able to make Rob Holding look halfway decent when we park 11 men behind the ball and play cowardly football. No doubt in my mind ppl will be singing this guys praises as our best buy of the summer, just as they did Gabriel and Tierney the past few seasons.

My point of mocking this transfer is that we could get a player of similar talent level for half the cost. All the other big clubs have done just that this summer. This transfer of a 23 year old England international feels more like a PR stunt than a move by a football club trying to build a squad to compete.

Obviously means jack shit though doesn’t it, a thing- in this case player- is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it in this type of deals.
