I can see him dragging us further down and then leaving with Kroenke when you can’t repair the damage anymore.
I don’t think they see weakness in our attack, rather they see weakness in our midfield & its ability to protect the goal when they hit us on the counter
Klopp sussed us out alright, Xhaka and Ramsey playing as a two is a total disaster and clever teams with plenty of pace will destroy us
The fact the players couldn’t give a toss won’t help either of course
History will look back on Wenger’s misplaced faith in our shite English players as what did him in.
It was Wenger’s Stalingrad, Iraq War or whatever.
I think future fans will look back at Wenger as someone who came and won shit for a while the league was a 2 horse race between him and Alex Ferguson, then as someone who worked under much stricter economic conditions than his peers and had to break even for a bunch of seasons while being forced to sell top players against his will, by method of buying young talents cheap (especially English ones who would sell at the highest profit), scrape 4th, get CL money and sell improved players hoping that by the time we got a new stadium and a new sponsor deal FFP would set things straight and we could be competitive again.
But when it turned out that FFP didn’t do shit and unlike at Arsenal where the owners demanded break even or make profit, Chelsea, United and City got themselves rich daddies who would throw hundreds of millions of pounds at their teams whenever they needed it to stay competitive until they were at a point where it was impossible for any other team to compete long term. These arguments were completely disregarded year in and out by gradually more disgruntled fans using imaginary scenarios and anecdotal evidence to argue against why it’s not just relevant but absolutely crucial to our performance.
Rather this change of scenery was interpreted by fans as the manager becoming shite at his job, lacking ambitions and for some dumb fucking reason getting greedy (as if he got to keep what he didn’t spend), and they started wanting him out for not being able to compete with teams that had squads that cost twice or thrice as much as his. This went on and on to the point where it was just everyday normality to disrespect and abuse a not perfect but good manager, one of our own and a legend by merit, for not being able to punch a light year above his weight regularly, excusing their appalling behaviour with a sense of urgency based on entitlement.
And so desperatly fans began to reason that if we just got a new manager in he would get more (or perhaps pocket less) money than Wenger from did from our owners and this would make us competitive again, alternatively this would “shake things up lol, I’m bored”, completely misunderstanding where the problem at the club lied (which is billionaires at the top made business decisions ten years ago aiming for secured financial stability which would render us unable to compete economically unless FFP hit… and it didn’t) and eventually Wenger ran out his contract after being his usual stubborn self to the bitter end, abused til the last day by his own supporters for circumstances that were, most of the time, out of his control.
Over all a 4/5 manager, point dropped for being too stubborn towards the end.
TL;dr
ty for letting me know cool cat
You’re brushing Wenger’s culpability under the rug here big time , money is just one part of the equation but Poch at Spuds has demonstrated just how competitive a team can be with less money but with a coach who knows exactly what the fuck he’s doing on the football side.
He’s not 4/5 by a long shot, it isn’t money that people want when they say they want someone new in. But rather a total change in philosophy from top to bottom, someone who can install a winning mentality , inspire the players and truly lead with a tactical base that has legit nous and organisation.
Not just send them out and ask them to win in the same way for well over a decade that has produced the same lacklustre results again and again.
Nah legit though, that line just doesn’t work anymore. When the big man wants to spend, he has been allowed to spend.
That £180,000 a week is more than what any sane club, even the sugar daddy ones will be spending on Ox. But we played it cos Wenger was fine with it. He was allowed £50 million to spend on Lacazette etc. The money IS there. There are so many reasons why this is an outdated and completely wrong statement to make.
There is only 1 reason Arsenal do or don’t do things with regards to recruitment. Not because of lack of funds, but because of whether Wenger is OK with it or not. Simple.
Also despite what you think, Kroenke is not too different from any other owner. You don’t think Liverpool fans don’t say the same rubbish about their owners not wanting to invest? Well they do.
And also you think transfer issues and spending money is the number 1 issue people have with Wenger?
I wish. Nowhere near. I wouldn’t even mind that his hands were tied etc or even if he didn’t want to spend that much money.
My number 1 issue is that he vastly underachieved with the players he does have. Stupid terrible tactical decisions, playing LBs at CB, terrible defensive shape, complete inconsistency, no urgency or drive. These are problems that have existed for at least 10 years now and will not change while he is here, and these are completely down to him and there are no excuses for that.
The brass neck to call Arsenal fans entitled when we have put up with for so much longer than anyone else will.
You can’t ignore his absolute complicity in the chain of events you describe. He is not a victim of the decisions of others, he has always known exactly what he has had to work with and he’s been happy to do so.
He’s responsible for a wage structure that has massively over valued player after player after player. We have a superstar wage bill but we’ve basically never paid superstar wages.
He’s responsible for the playing staff at our disposal. Nothing will ever convince me that he doesn’t have final say over whether or not all of the deals we’ve done over the years went through or not. You need look no further than the window only Cech came in for evidence of this imo.
He’s responsible for the attitude or our players. He talks so much about teamwork and mental strength and all the rest of it. Where’s the evidence that he actually values any of this beyond the soundbites it gives him the opportunity to use.
People talk a lot about how Wenger is tainting his legacy now. I don’t agree with that, the failures of the last decade are now merely a part of that legacy. Ultimately he will be remembered as our greatest ever manager but also a deeply flawed one.
No, this is what I think ‘future’ fans will consider. You guys are still ‘present’ fans. No point in throwing yourselves at that post to confirm that exactly the type of fans I describe in there are in abundance at the moment, I was already confident enough of that lol
Wengers a fucking nut job ffs.
Well I don’t think just because some time passes the reality will disappear and some “didn’t he do well” line of thought will prevail over the actual truth.
I couldn’t tell you any of Herbert Chapman’s failures as Arsenal manager but there isn’t a billion data sources on them. Wenger’s success will sit side by side with his failure now and forever.
He is running the club into the ground.
We are missing out on a generation of young talent because we refuse to turn the roster over and seriously invest while our competitors - even Liverpool - do so far more aggressively.
Wenger justifies this by appealing to the value of squad continuity. But that squad is not only not good enough, they have quit on him and the best players are determined to leave.
Think about that. We are going to be fucked for years and years.
what in the fuck are these new guys doing also…leymann has done nothing the chief negotiator from sky has had nothing to negotiate, this club and manager are fucking frauds!
How would you know what they’ve done?
from the outside looking in they seem to have done fuck all. We have all of these contracts being rufused no new players coming in yeah we really needed that guy this whole summer has been a fucking waste yet again.
I don’t even fully know/understand what his job is. Do you?
supposed to be in for contracts…suppose he could be in for commercial as well as player, but if he has been handed the contract stuff for players far too little to late and if this was gonna happen anyway we should have been doing other stuff instead. This summer has been fucking terrible we are pissing about with players like Debuchy etc just fucking junk the cunts and get some players in. Mind you i dont think anyone wants to play for wenger anymore so maybe no difference will be made anyway.
I’m no longer angry. I’m disappointed. I’m sad. I’m pining for the Arsenal of old.
Nothing makes sense anymore. I don’t understand the board’s decision to keep Wenger and I don’t understand Wenger’s decisions anymore. I honestly don’t know what joy Wenger can possibly get from this job either. As a fan I’m certainly not having fun – I can’t even relate to the team anymore and that makes me feel sad.
Yesterday was a colossal embarrassment. We didn’t even have a single shot on target - a performance like that from a group of players of that level should be illegal! But what does Wenger do to change things when from the off he can see our set-up just isn’t working? He does nothing for ages of course because he is not capable of reaction.
“We were not at the level requested for such a game – not physically, not technically, not mentally,” he said after the game, as if there is nothing he can do about it – those things are literally his job!
This isn’t a situation that can be solved with a couple of ins/outs before transfer deadline day either. Even signing Messi wouldn’t appease the fans or rescue the team from this mess! We need a complete revamp, we need to rediscover our identity. Henry is right, there is a culture of comfort at Arsenal, but sadly nothing will be done – Kroenke won’t sack Wenger and Wenger won’t walk away. So we’re stuck in limbo wondering how far down Wenger and the board will drag our once great club.
The season is new but the problem are old.
