Everyone is strengthening though…
Wenger is taking the fucking piss with that one. does he seriously think anyone’s going to pay serious attention to that!?
Thinking about it, i refuse to believe he believes any of that shit!
Everyone said that last year and it never materialized. I remember loling my head off when everyone here was flipping out cause Chelsea signed Pedro. Chelsea, City, and the scum haven’t done much of note. United is the only team making moves. But then again the last time they spent 200m in the market it didn’t help them much. If there’s cause for worry its because of the managers that have been hired not the players bought. This is not an endorsement of our transfer window but I still believe just because you spend a lot of money and bringb in new players that you aren’t necessarily strengthening your team.
Love Wenger ominous message on the spending and increased competition “Only one will win it.”
I think we have reached a point where we don’t necessarily need much better players but just different players.
We have the most stale team in the PL and if we don’t seriously shake it up and get some fresh faces in we will struggle to top four and will lose our best players.
Anyone doubting this only has to remember, it has happened several times before.
Not many players that strengthen the teams? In the next 2-3 years we’ll look at the likes of Gomes, Sanches, Dembele, Sane etc. and say damn, we’d love players like that but we just can’t afford to pay 70m for them and even if we did, they play for big clubs so they’re not on the market. The same way we look at the likes of Aubameyang, Hazard, Higuain, Griezmann etc. now.
I can’t believe Wenger / this club has completely lost their eye for spotting a talent. Yes you get the odd star to come through the Barcelona or Bayern academy that is untouchable for their whole career but almost every player we need was once an up and coming player at a club worse than Arsenal and was transferred at some stage to another club for money that Arsenal could afford. We could have taken Lukaku from Anderlecht, Modric from Zagreb, Suarez from Ajax, Aubameyang from ASSE, Dybala from Palermo but if we’re completely unwilling to take these risks then we cannot complain that we don’t end up with the players.
That’s a great point.
Who was the last prospect we bought that turned into a top class player?
Southampton seem to be the club that leads the way in finding new talent.
That first part is really the key here to the “we can’t compete” pathetic argument. How much were Mahrez, Payet, and countless others purchased for before they were “discovered” - and there are some really, really talented young players as you point out that are gettable every year. Pogba was never in reach, but it is an outlier and even if he went for 50 million instead, we STILL weren’t in the frame b/c we wouldn’t pay requisite wages.

Its a fair point but the difference with them 3 sides is they have pedigree of winning recent titles.
We dont and players and agents know it, which married with Wenger reluctance to spend has got stuck up shit creek.
We signed Sanogo from some circus in France. See how that turned out. ![]()
The add-one-piece at a time strategy Wenger is applying isn’t exactly working either.
@BigWeng_4LYFE It’s true that Man U wasted 200m when LVG was manager but to be fair they have seen that wasn’t working and have now got a top manager and four world class players within a few weeks.
They have done more in that time than we have since we moved to the Emirates.
They are doing everything they can to become successful again, something maybe we could learn from.
Four?
Something else we could learn from them, is that since Fergie left, they have spent a shit load of cash and won 1 FA Cup, and 1 Community Shield…
on if he expects to sign a defender before the season starts…
Yes I do.
@JohnnyH My point is they are doing everything they can to be successful.
I didn’t say they have been successful.
@JakeyBoy At least three of the players they have bought are world class.
It was probably an exaggeraton to say Bailly is world class but he would get in our first team and Ibrahimovich, Mkhiayran and Pogba, certainly are and Mourinho is a world class manager.
This is a bit over the top. Myki looks great but has only had last season as a break out, Ibra will be dead soon despite being undeniably WC, and I have never actually seen Pogba play that well. Jury is out for me.
Didn’t realise that Pogba had been signed by Man U yet, my bad.
Bellerin could be on his way there, but is still inconsistent and needs to work on certain aspects of his game. Apart from him I’m not sure.
I’m on holiday in Holland and only getting snippets of football news so I might be wrong about Pogba but I thought the deal was almost done.
