Arsène Wenger

He signed a contract worth 2.5million a year in 2004, extended in 2007. You think that was a pittance at the time?

I googled “Wenger best paid managers” and this post was the tenth result :joy:

Never said Wenger didn’t earn well

Oh he deserved it, but blows a hole in that idea the club couldn’t afford a good coach?

So he was offered a significantly better contract around 2011/2012?

Cos I just saw a 2012 article placing him at 4th in the list of the best paid managers in football.

Things must have got rapidly better to enable us to go from Allardyce wages to fourth highest in the world wages.

No good coach would have selected to manage Arsenal.

Would any of Mourinho, Ferguson, Ancellotti, Pep Guardiola agree to manage a club with financial constraints that we had?

You said that all we could afford was Allardyce level managers, that certainly implies that Wenger was earning shit wages.

Yes because wages are not the only expense of getting a good manager.
You won’t get Mourinho to manage a team assembled for peanuts.

That’s what I mean by affording a good manager

Every football club in top leagues can afford to pay 5-6 million to a single member of the football team, yet somehow we only see a handful of top manager trading between handful of top clubs.

You believe Wenger in that we had to sell a key player every season or we’ll go bust?

Explain Arshavin.

Well not bust but club won’t generate any profit if not for player sales.

Arshavin was an investment when it looked like Top 4 was under threat and we were losing it to Aston Villa. If Fabregas had not been injured that season, we wouldn’t have needed to buy Arshavin.

Give me a name.
Which top manager of 00s would have agreed to manage Arsenal where there is a need to sell a player to add to club revenue?

Wenger was getting top ten in the world wages, the idea that that doesn’t buy you a better calibre of manager than Allardyce is utter madness, even with limited transfer spending.

Nope, you won’t.

Give me a name of top manager who would have joined Arsenal without demanding better transfer budget than Wenger’s
Arsenal just were not in a position to get one such manager

Shifting of goalposts. It was just Allardyce level managers we’d have been able to attract at first, now you’re asking for a “top manager of 00s”

yeah sure. Shifting of goalposts.

Even if you get in a decent manager at the time, that manager would have used the Benitez strategy to get in, and play into getting the sack for the termination bonus.

They would have had no interest in doing the best for the club.

Just to interject. I don’t even get the logic by the way, Wenger-out didn’t really carry much traction until the 2010’s. Before that the fanbase still heavily backed him.

You wrote this first, and this is what I replied to, so yes, you have since shifted the goalposts in now asking what top manager we could have afforded. There are a great number of managers who sit between the best in the world and Allardyce level.

The logic is Wenger could have easily dropped the job once it became clear that the finances were not there to help him continue his success and win more trophies.

He could have easily gone to a different league and different club to earn more money. x times more money than what he was earning with the club.

Picking and choosing.

But good to know you are vouching affordable mediocre manager because you clearly have no name of a top manager who would have taken the job.
