Arsenal transfers 25/26

In which we’re not taking advantage and argubly are making it even harder for ourselves.

That makes it even worse.

We aren’t seizing the opportunity and why not? Will there be a better chance of qualifying for the CL via league qualification in the next few seasons? It’ll only get harder from here on out.

They’re definitely worse right now than the squad with which they entered January, that’s the point.

Kind of a sad salad strategy though, isn’t it?

If your main rivals for fourth are essentially treading water, and you have targets identified, now is the time to pull them forward.

Also, I get that Auba appears to be toast physically but I wouldn’t be surprised if he puts in a decent six months somewhere else just being away from Arteta and the cloud that hung over things here.

This claim gets made all the time and there’s just no basis at all for it. Almost every season you find people claiming that the competition next year is going to be better or that X team won’t have another bad year like this (for example, everybody was saying this last year and the year before too). But football doesn’t work that way. Teams rise and fall, shit always happens to somebody. For a long time you’ve almost always needed between 67-75 points for top four. It will very likely stay that way going forward. The important thing in that context is to try to build a team that can regularly get 75 points or more.

If we can bring in a player right now and do it in a way that doesn’t hurt that longer term goal, I’m absolutely all for it and I’ll be disappointed if it doesn’t happen. But spending lots of money right now on the wrong player just to increase our chances of top four this season by less than 5% would be fucking stupid.

I refuse to believe someone who has soccer in their user tag lol

I don’t quite see it being as open as it has been this season with regard to how bad United have looked, Spurs being a dumpster fire and even Chelsea looking out of sorts.

Even IF we do get Europa league football a cup competition is anyone’s game and can come down to luck, look at how we’re doing with a lighter schedule by having no European football. Add that into the mix and we’re supposed to get it via the league? This was a prime opportunity that not many foresaw emerging at the beginning of the season and if we’re content to ship out players and not go balls to the wall then it just smacks of a bottle job and can’t say I expect much else from Edu and Arteta.

Chelsea.

Lets see what happens before the end of the window. Like you, I definitely am hoping we bring somebody in. But a smart club should be trying to balance short term and long term objectives. And a smart club should also realize that most January moves don’t actually change their likelihood of getting top four by that much when you’re in a four way race for one spot. There are just too many other factors. So you have to seriously question how much you’re willing to pay to increase your chances by literally a handful of percentage points.

Arshavin would disagree with that.

Meh. Huge inferential mistake to draw some big conclusion from one transfer.

Any serious attempt to model the situation - which I would hope KSE and others have people who can think about these kinds of things in a serious way - is going to conclude that the impact of a single player (short of Mbappe or whoever) is pretty marginal. You have four teams competing in a relatively small number of games, luck is massive, injuries are massive, refereeing decisions are massive, form of other players is massive. All those variables can significantly alter the outcome and are out of your control. Just adding one player to the mix on your side just doesn’t dramatically change the scales.

That’s true tbh.

The only thing that seems to remain status quo is we won’t be in the top 4, this is what the 6th consecutive season ?

I can respect that. Still not sure where our goals are coming from though.

If it turns out to be ISAK after all this then Arsenal Twitter is some next level banditry :rofl:

I hear you. I really want a striker brought in. I just want it to be either a short loan like Morata or Jovic at low cost or also fine with blowing a massive wad on Isak if that’s who they really believe in and would target in the summer. I just don’t want us to do something desperate like spend 40m to give a five year contract to a guy we otherwise wouldn’t really prefer for the striker position.

Since when do our fans all of a sudden give a fuck about what the boards objectives are? Wenger spent less money and was actually getting better results, what do you reckon the clubs objectives were back then?

I care about the club’s level actually improving in a sustainable way for the long term, which means not doing stupid stuff to desperately try to improve results in the short term that fucks the long term plan.

Since you are intent on bringing Wenger into any conversation, some examples of dumb short term thinking might be spending huge on a player like Lacazette six months before you buy another striker that can’t play with him, or refusing to sell Alexis Sanchez when we could, or trading Alexis for Mkhi rather than for money, or refusing to sell Ozil and instead giving him 350k per week, or not selling Aaron Ramsey when we could and letting him walk for free, or giving a new deal to Calum Chambers rather than selling him. You know, that kind of stuff.
