Arsenal transfers 25/26

He was one of the best players at Man City and it seemed as if his poor form coincided with Arteta leaving.
So if Arteta wants him, it would be a great transfer for a player who is still has plenty to give and who is only around the same age as Pepe.

Man City won’t want to sell to a direct rival so we might be one of the favourites to get him, unless he wants to play abroad.

I just hope he doesn’t go to spurs, who were rumoured to be interested in him during the transfer window.

Replacing a Man City bound Saka with a 26 year old Sterling on 300k/wk is a total Raul move but I can absolutely see it happening.

I really like him as a talent but he’s definitely not my first choice if we’re trying to make a big signing.

Is 26 too old in your eyes?

He’s miles ahead of Saka in every imaginable way anyway so if them two are competing for a spot in the team it’s a no brainer who’s starting.

Sterling has been a quality player but he’s just not my ideal type of wide player. Would rather we signed someone like Raphinha.

Taken outside of that City team some may be surprised what he’s like with regard to domestic football. There has been a clear regression in the past few seasons and it says something that he used to have a status almost equal to KDB for Pep and now he’s on the outs.

Wouldn’t dismiss him out of hand but like @Powderfinger mentions it would take a heck of a lot of resources to sign him and something just doesn’t look quite right. Perhaps he needs a change of scenery but I’m not convinved he’s a sure thing like others may do.

Would Sterling want to come to Arsenal?

I think for what it would cost, fee + wages, compared to what we would get back it just wouldn’t be worth it.

Crazy to see that the majority of posts are against signing Sterling. I struggle to wrap my head around how much I think he would actually improve us. My only concern would be that he shares a position with ESR but that could be worked around. Signing someone of Sterling’s calibre on top of the business we’ve already done would really make me believe we can start competing again sooner than later.

Also these last few comments are really such a strong indication that the modern fan is way too concerned over player ages and finances lol.

I really like the way we’ve recently recruited and feel we should be following this path for future business.

Handicapping ourselves with bloated wages isn’t something I want to live through again. Having a lower wage bill allows us to operate in the markets better, rather than our recent woes of trying to move shitters on, but clubs baulking at said shitter’s wages.

Sterling at £300K+ p/w doesn’t guarantee anything for me.

We’re not at a level where we can add these pieces yet and I think we’re best served with being more shrewd.

I would take Sterling if the opportunity arises, if at least 30m can somehow be offset by selling Pepe, but I would be a bit concerned by the combined finishing of Sterling and Saka in a starting line up. I don’t think Sterling ever will be clinical now, and Saka is not clinical yet. We do need more goals coming from midfield and forwards other that the CF if we are going to break back into Top 4 in the PL, and ESR’s run of goals is welcome right now.

Sterling would not be receptive to dropping down a level to Arsenal.

He sees himself as a player for elite clubs.

The focus for Arsenal should be on players with something to prove at a higer level

I don’t buy that he’s available for £45m.
I’m not as big of a fan but I know Arsenal fans have a thing for him so I wouldn’t object going for him. Perhaps if we earn a CL spot he would consider moving to us in the summer.

Definitely not too old and like I said, I like the player but in my cynical scenario we’d be replacing Saka with Sterling which feels like a bummer to me on an emotional level.

Sterling can play on either side and also behind the striker no?
You can definitely fit all of Saka, Sterling and ESR into the side.

Yes, I agree. I was just making the joke — which has obviously not landed — that if we replaced losing Saka to City with Sterling on a free making a boatload of cash, I’d be disappointed.

Sorry, I’m an idiot. I’ve just seen your post above.

You’re asking the man who still maintains we shouldn’t have signed Partey cos he’s 27, you know what the answer to your question is lol

Oh gtfo. I had legit concerns about signing a holder and not an attacking midfielder. I thought we needed goals going into the 20-21 season more than we needed a holding midfielder. Yeah, I had concerns about his age and coming from a really structured system.

And he had a bad year last year. I think we’re obviously seeing a way different Partey than last year but he’s also being asked to play differently this year.

And I thought we needed a real rebuild which didn’t include starting with a holder, but an attacker. As it happened we did do a big rebuild, it just happened this summer.

You always used his age a detractor in your arguments against him though haha

I’m all for depth, so I’m not against this transfer if it is possible, but I do think this is slightly overlooking Odegaard. A month back quite a few were doing the same regarding ESR, so it is my hope that Odegaard similarly makes it hard to be overlooked within the next 2-3 months. I certainly believe in him as long as he can stay injury free. An Arsenal squad can accommodate Saka, ESR, Odegaard, and Sterling though (Pepe would become surplus, esp. as we have Martinelli also).
