I still find it a little strange we spent on him when we had Saliba coming and signed Gabriel, along with all the other options we have.

Agreed. Mari looked decent enough in his few matches and he has particular value in being a left footer who has played a lot in a high line before. You need squad players, the key is just not to pay a lot for them and not to give them wages that make them hard to move on. I donāt see anything really wrong with his signing.
Yeah in retrospectā¦ Iād have to go back and look at all the timingā¦ in general though, I donāt mind too much those sorts of signings b/c they cost so little and offer at least some upside (sales or maybe they develop on loan, etc)

Mari will be off on loan to Besiktas or CSKA Moscow next summers and then heāll be off for like ā¬3m to Valladolid the season after.

Mari is another one who looks like a Raul bunga bunga special. The loan plus permanent signing for two separate agentās fees is shady AF.
Not any slight on the player. He might be serviceable but it does make the Gabriel signing look weird unless we really donāt see Saliba at all until February or March.

It was reported that Arteta āsigned offā on Mari because he worked with him at Ciy? He could be decent, but wouldnāt put him at the same level as Gabriel and Saliba from what I have seen. Maybe they knew that the CB options we had within the squad were all pretty poor and they thought they would need to bring extra players in to cover in those positions, especially with Arteta wanting to play 3 CBs. The squad is clearly evolving and we may need to improve the quality of the squad gradually. Plus you need to remember that we had to make a decision to sign Mari around when the league restarted and it didnāt look as though we would get European football this season at that time, so maybe they thought that they had to buy Mari and Cedric, given the lack of finances available in the summer/lack of attraction of European football.
I personally think that with Gabriel, Saliba and Holding we have 3 very good CBs. Mari may be decent for squad depth and rotation. After Luiz leaves next summer I would still like us to sign another really top quality CBā¦Gabriel, Upamecano and Saliba would be a pretty awesome back 3!
