Arsenal Defence - Discussion

I think we are the best defensive unit in the world right now.

Luis Enrique said we’re the best team in the world off the ball.

It’s quite funny, we’re actually better off the ball than we are on it.

as an off the ball enjoyer this pleases me :xhaka2:

When Calafiori and Timber play as our fullbacks, the impact of the team improves dramatically. The new dimension they offer is really refreshing.

I don’t disagree but personally don’t think you can disregard White. I think he has been one of our best and most consistent players over the last few seasons. The great thing is, when they are all fit, we have 5 top quality defenders. we are a million miles away from the crap Arteta inherited as a backline.

Conceded only one goal from open play this season (Haaland goal?) 8/9 games already into the season, Arsenal’s defence keeps on growing and growing.

Do find it ironic that out of all the teams we played so far, defensively we struggled the most against Man Utd in that opener.

They have the best npxg in the league i read somewhere lol

I still have to remind myself I’m watching my team sometimes. Our current defence is in stark contrast to some of the rubbish we got used to with the likes of Mustafi and Sokratis as our centre back options. Arteta deserves huge credit for transforming our team into such a robust and competent defensive unit.

It started a long time ago when Wenger brought in Silvestre and proceeded to tolerated the likes of Squillaci and Djorou.

I do have to give credit to the duo of Mertesacker and Koschielny which wasn’t the greatest of center back pairings but definitely better than Mustafi and Sokrates.

I didn’t think Djourou was that bad, same a Senderos, started off really well. However Squillaci, Silvester, Andre Santos and Pascal Cygan :person_facepalming::sweat_smile:

There was also Stepanovs, Luzhny, Debuchy, Mavro, Holding, Chambers, etc.
But this is what happens when proper defenders didn’t meet our valuation so had to wait until the end of every window to pick up dross like this.

But at least Arteta has seen how important the defence is to a team and has assembled and organised probably the best defence in Europe.

Hold up, Debuchy is not in that same bracket. Never mind twice !

I agree, that was a bit unfair so I took one out.

Debuchy for his availability or lack there of.

Blame arnautovic for that

Debuchy was great but was very unlucky that shoulder injury ruined his time here.

Lichtsteiner suould get a mention - another emergency loan that ended up playing way too much.
