Liverpool led us right up the garden path on that deal and I’m firmly convinced they were never going to sell him to us. We thought there was a deal, then they demanded more. Had we met that, they’d probably have continued to revise the price.
Basically, never do business with Liverpool.
Although we massively got our own back on them by fleecing them for £40m for AOC lol

That was so frustrating because we were desperate for a top quality midfielder like him.
The club had repeatedly told supporters that we can compete in the transfer market with anyone and would only buy super quality, so Alonso was perfect for us as well as being PL experienced.
But despite all that, Wenger refused to pay the extra 2m Liverpool wanted because Alonso didn’t meet with his valuation, so we ended up losing out.

Worth mentioning this was around the time Wenger abandoned 4-4-2 for a three man midfield. Which necessitated more quality midfielders at the club (Given we lost Gilberto and Flamini at the same time too). But instead we persisted giving too much time bums like Denilson. Sigh.

he used to really torment liverpool, every match he scored against them. I remember the look on Skertels face in one of the clips when he scored and he was absolutely sick of him.
I’ve heard this a few times from people but this isn’t actually true. He was on barnstorming form for them not too long after joining them, scoring in massive games particularly in the Champions League. If anything it revitalised his career massively in a system that suited his style of play much more. Another victim of late era Wenger not having a clue how to function a team in the modern era tbh. He even alluded to this in a post-match interview I believe. League and Champions League winner since the move. Unfortunately for him his injury problems have never stopped and his career has never gotten off the ground because of that. Very much a Klopp player though.
This goal was vicious. AoC had a shot in him.
