Remember how quick Rice trying to retrieve and return to defend against 5 Pool players last season?
We got luck that TAA’s shot hit the bar, but we cannot deny Rice’s presense in front of the shooter did made a difference.
If that was Partey, I doubt he could get back in time.
It is all about speed and mobility these days.
Kroos was great, but having him (and Andrich) and Gundogan in the middle was killing Germany.
I’ve always found his mobility an extra that came with him. Most DLPs aren’t known for it.
Enzo, Kroos, Kimmich, Bruno, Busquets and even Rodri aren’t really known for it.
You can go back to some older ones as well.
It is something he used to use a lot so there is some adjusting period. I don’t think he can go on these runs like he used, at least not as often.
I think at this stage of his career he should be more reserved and let the guys in front of him do that.
My concern is him staying fit, not his current level. It’s not as good as 22/23 but it is still very good.
We should definitely keep him, but as a cover. He’s still top quality, but we need to sign a top midfielder who can play 50 games a season and help us reach that next level. Teams looking to win the title and CL should aim to have top players like Partey on the bench.
Probably because he plays more than twice every six weeks. He has more opportunities to make an impression.
@GC-Maniac I’ve never found his mobility to be an issue. I think sometimes his decision making can be a little weird but it’s hard to overlook some how bad decision making can come with prolonged absences. I think it’s a huge risk to rely on him this coming season and hopefully we have someone else come in.
Partey is still an excellent player but he isn’t the player he was when he signed for us. We should be cashing in on him this summer, but I doubt we will now. Next summer we need to upgrade in this position.
Preseason is difficult to judge from because everybody is playing at like 85% so anybody can look washed if they are jogging around in that mode and then an opponent turns it up closer to full speed.
But I remain pretty worried about Partey being washed based on seeing him in person last night. That 6 position really takes a lot of legs in our system if we’re pressing high. Does he have the juice to do that and then make the recovery runs necessary? He spent a lot of last night caught in no man’s land and I don’t think he consistently makes good decisions about whether to press aggressively or whether to fall back into space. Jorginho has the same physical limitations if not worse but he makes better decisions in that regard.
I suspect we will see a lot of Rice at the 6 this year, with Merino and Odegaard ahead. And when we go with a controlling player at the 6 I wouldn’t be surprised if its more often Jorginho than Partey.
He looks cooked to me. The good news is that we don’t need him. I wish things worked out differently but I honestly don’t even expect him to contribute much.
