I don’t think we have been found out. Like you say yourself later in your post. It’s the current crop of players that don’t fit the style of play.
We’re dependent on Rice, Havertz, Martinelli and Trossard for the left midfield/(false) striker position. None of these guys possess the technical level to play the short passing game required too break teams down.
What do you mean? You don’t think players who can actually play in the short passing (unlike Rice or Havertz) or have positional awareness (unlike Martinelli) or who can combine from the false 9 position, like Jesus in his first season, won’t improve us?
What I’m saying is despite the fact we need personnel upgrades the very system itself needs to change because I can see issues persisting even with better players
Current personnel doesn’t mean you have to play such slow, repetitive and at times ponderous football, Arteta hasn’t been able to conjure solutions for a team which is very much made in his image up until this point
There have been clear iterations of style of play during Arteta’s short reign to be fair.
Season 1 = give it to the fullback and swing in crosses at will
Season 2 = horse-shoe of death, pass, pass, pass
Season 3 = better pool of players, clearer, more incisive passing, if a little too gung-ho but enjoyable to watch
Season 4 = similar to the above but with more patience and focus on pressing/work rate
Season 5 = controlled, slower, more defensive and reliant on strengths of big individuals in the team
Arteta is never going to be that coach like Ange or Flick who exposed themselves at one end and rely on the front winning it for them. Nor will he be a spam it to the best player guy like Klopp/Slot/Ten Hag.
I think we will be reverting back to a system to that of season 4 with the arrivals of some players we have e been linked with.
And also with the players we have returning to fitness and form.
I really am convinced that we haven’t purposely played slower this season, it’s been a product of the poor form of Odegaard mostly and the injuries around that.
Yeah, this and Jesus being out, he used to make shit happen all the time, both on and off the ball which made football more entertaining to watch. Kai filled in and did alright in terms of the numbers, but the style still changed a bit, he isn’t at his best at #9 imo, though I’m happy he did an alright job when we needed someone to step up.
