The situation clearly calls for some specialised units for transgender prisoners. They’re both too much of a risk and at too much risk themselves in the general population of male and female prisons.

Is that definitely true?
What I’ve read is that any prisoner entering the system is assessed by the Prison Services and assigned what is deemed the appropriate arrangements.
The article you posted says this:
An SPS spokesperson said: “Where there are any concerns about any risks posed by an individual, to themselves or others, we retain the ability to keep them separate from the mainstream population until an agreed … plan is in place.”
The Scottish Government said: “SPS is reviewing their policy on managing transgender prisoners in partnership with the Scottish Government and that process is nearing completion.”
You’d imagine trans specific prisons or wings will be the outcome.
I guess but if push comes to shove, the specialist centres or isolation should be sex based and not self identity based.
Putting biological males into biological female prisons is the worst case. And putting biological females into jail’s with biological males is also worst case but slightly less than the former.
As to the first point, I have no real feelings about that, I’d leave it to people better qualified.
Both those cases in the second point are horrendous. There’s so much risk from and to such prisoners.
Obtaining a Gender Recognition Certificate does not automatically provide access to specific accommodation.
