Sir Alex Ferguson masters displays the art of rotation for Manchester...
Daniel Taylor: Given the number of games Manchester United have played, their rotation policy has paid dividends
They call it edging where Iām from
Funnily enough, I thought a good video game comparison is that people think because on FIFA and Football Manager if you rest a player theyāre automatically firing on all cylinders for the next game, thatās how real life works too.
Obviously both comparisons are far too simplistic. Some players benefit from playing very regularly, others need to be managed differently.
Arteta clearly favours that if a player can play, they do play. What you or I might think is at the end of the day, not that important.
Got a big festival down here tomorrow (diwali/tihar) and a day off, and the lads got me a bit drunk. So looks like i might miss the game. But anyways, COYG. Donāt field many field teamers isall Arteta lad⦠COYG!!
Not sure mate, I think it has something to do about seemen retention
It seems Arteta really wants to manage all aspects of our players⦠PERFORMANCE.
All Iām saying is, If I could medpack spam to keep Saka at 100 and Megasphere to keep him at 200.
I would.
Firing on all cylinders for a next game is not the only reasoning for resting players. in general itās the longevity of the team for the long haul competing on all fronts as we aspire to. Squad management is very important especially when weāre attempting to dethrone City for three seasons in a row now.
Why do you feel the need to state the obvious with regard to what Arteta thinks about posts here? No one is thinking that whatever they say will get back to Arteta and influence him. You saying that comes off as an inane way to brush aside things you donāt agree with.
I just think itās not worth getting overly exercised by. Arteta has always managed the squad this way and thereās no reason itās going to change now.
I do of course disagree with it being quite as imperative to rest players as you think it is. I wonder if you can really have the kind of demanding atmosphere that Arteta has built at the club and also have a culture where people miss games they should play.
For the league cup, I donāt really mind if thereās rotation. Most people would have this competition very low on their priority list, especially in the early stages. But for the other competitions, they are first team fixtures where we should field our best teams with maybe 1-2 players rotated if thereās a pressing need to. And what our strongest team is doesnāt have to stay the same across an entire season.
Heās always managed the squad this way yeah, but this is year 3 of us attempting to perform at the requisite intensity and consistency itāll take to finally win another league title.
That matters and is an important distinction to make IMO.
End of the day the proof will be in the pudding in what weāre looking like come May and how well equipped our players are notch win after win with the current utilisation of players. For me its not something thatās sustainable and at this rate we will see a marked drop off in performances for certain players such as Havertz and even Saka.
Given the injuries weāve had I think he has to recognise this type of game as one where we should be seeing 8-9 fringe players.
In the CL itās fine to just do 1-2 or even keep the first XI and sub them off when possible.
No point moaning that we only had 12-14 good enough players the last 2 years if we donāt rotate anyway.
Firing on all cylinders for a next game is not the only reasoning for resting players.
I think that alone is already a good enough reason.
I mean, whatās the point of dragging a fatigued player though some games, while heās not performoong on his top level, when you could just give him a break and have back to his best soon.
And Iān not even talkinga about completely giving him a game off. Even taking off a player before full time, not pushing him into the red zone, can have a big impact both long and short term.
I remember a graphic of Ozilās average minutes in Madrid vs Arsenal that was posted during some discussion about his fitness levels, years ago.
His average minutes at Madrid were something in 70s, while at Arsenal his was almost finishing most of the games. Thereās no debate he was fitter and in much better physical condition at Madrid, and his athleticism was on a decline as soon he joined, althoigh he was still young.
Obviously the load management is far from the only reason for that but I absolutely think Mourinho was much smarter in managing his load than Wenger.
Ferguson was a also a huge proponent of squad rotation and it was discussed a lot during the peak United yearsā¦

I donāt know why is this being promoted as a new, woke, thing again?
I donāt think people should be worried about Arteta rotating here. He will, heās rotated in the PL already and with White allegedly not even in the squad, it should tell you something.
Just donāt lose your head if you do see some starters get involved. You have to involve some of them or the cohesion of the team is gone.
People are whining about Arteta not winning anything, even the small cups.
We just need to play our best hands and have minor changes on one or two positions.
Just donāt lose your head if you do see some starters get involved.

Only timber and saka should cause that tbh.
I think Timber will start, especially with White out.
I donāt see much concern with it either. In his case you have to build his fitness up again. You can always take him out.
And the same applies with Saka. Him and Martinelli could play a half each perhaps.

This I think is important. Arteta does rotate, in starting lineups and during games with pre-planned changes.
Just because we donāt see games with wholesale changes doesnāt mean it doesnāt happen.
The kind of lineups we used to see Wenger put out in the league cup are probably a thing of the past though.
Setford starts!

Proper rotation @Darkseid
I really like the midfield.
I think it has a great balance to get the most out of all 3.
Not a fan of Martinelli starting. He looked very tired in the second half against Liverpool.
A very strong lineup, should be more than enough for a comfortable win.
Setford. And people think we donāt rotate
