On this day…

That goal was with about 15 mins to go from memory and was a great goal, but I’m taking Silvinho’s strike in this instance.

Another thing I’ll say in relevance to the thread at Lauren is, in our 03/04 team I probably considered him in our bottom couple of players as starters, no disrespect to him as he was quality, just shows how far we’ve fallen though.

I was at that match in Southampton that lovely day. Until then Henry had looked skilful but his finishing had been awful. That goal really launched his career. Think he was the best player we ever had although I did adore Wrightey as our star striker before him.

Same here. I always considered him and Kolo (and Lehmann) the weak links ih that team.
Always felt he was kinda fragile defensively and error prone. Like you said - the standard was just so high, comparing him to world class guys like Campbell and Cole.
I actually wanted Arsene to shift Kolo to the RB position, he was a better defender (not good enough for the CB spot that time though) than Lauren and was still pretty good going forward.

Although I always rated Lauren high going forward (and it’s strange to me a lot of people look at him the opposite). Always very comfortable taking players on, very smooth in link up, combining with Fredde, was very important pushing our attacks from the right… We were always quite handicapped when he was injured, attacking wise, having to play Luzny there etc.
That was just my view at that time.

TBF to Lauren he wasn’t a fullback coming in. He was a midfielder and he didn’t even want to play fullback. So he was always going to better going forward than defensively

Of course. Even after he left us he was always used as a RM at Portsmouth (at least whenever I watched them).

Doesn’t get enough credit for booting Cristiano Ronaldo halfway into orbit at Highbury.

Hope he enjoys the new job

Lauren was a top defender and probably the most underrated player in the Invincibles team.

Loved him.

It’s crazy how quickly that entire team was dismantled.

One of the most underrated right backs of the premier league era imo. And to think he wasn’t even a natural RB. Truly a special player.

All the birthday wishes these past days to Bendtner and Djourou remind me how awful the past 11,5 years for Arsenal FC have been.
