All comps 31 starts this season at CF he scored 12 goals
This is your king?
He is a suspect and poor finisher, scores a good of his goals in games we’re going to win anyway or where we’ve already battered the opposition, he isn’t one for low xg and creating something out of nothing, has a poor weak foot etc.
But because he works hard which is a basic requirement for damn near any top team of note it’s fine, he bottlenecks this attack.
I was way against the Havertz signing as soon as we were linked with him but to say he has been a failure just doesn’t cut it. I think it’s certainly one where the
He’s very false-niney and plays a variety of roles in this team, so numbers wise, it’s good output from the type of player he is.
He certainly has his quirks and by no means would anyone that is making a case for him, asking for him to be the sole striker for this Arsenal team - that will hopefully be Gyökeres or whoever we do end up signing.
Not my king but also not anywhere near the biggest problem with our attack either. He’s very obviously our second best front three player. Every team needs multiple strikers and unless you have a Haaland or Isak its going to be a shared load. He’s a perfectly good player to be in that kind of mix and we should be glad to have him as one of the 5-6 forwards that we rely on.
Jesus and Martinelli are much bigger problems than Havertz, and really the players that have most held us back the last two years. If we think about what went wrong for the project that kept us from winning a big trophy the last two years, its not signing Kai Havertz, its Gabriel Jesus becoming a non-factor and Gabriel Martinelli plateauing rather than developing.
We are very clearly looking to replace and improve on those two players this summer and that’s a good thing.
Yeah, buy a starting striker and lw so Gabi and havertz are the backups.
We should absolutely not be buying a backup striker with the view to keeping Kai as #1. Buy a starter and if Kai somehow outperforms him then fine, we either have two good or two shit options if that happens.
We can again get into the spend of 65m on havertz (and 40m on merino) vs the opportunity to use it elsewhere but too late now.
But this brings the whole argument down doesn’t it? We rely on our back up too produce, because our number one option doesn’t produce enough/isn’t good enough…
We now play 55-60 games in a season, we need more than one striker who can play at a very high level. Nobody can play that many minutes at the intensity of the current PL, even if you take out the domestic cups its just too much. And if you play one guy into the ground he won’t be as effective and will likely eventually get injured, both of which happened with Havertz this year. The guy was completely out of gas by January then injured in February.
We need to sign another striker but if that guy is a slightly different profile to Havertz - hopefully more of a box killer - who contributes at a similar level it’ll be a good thing. We haven’t had that for two years and its really cost us.
We’ve seen him make several GK changes, as well as a lot of other defensive signings and has spent more than almost any other PL manager, so presumably he has a say.
As for Havertz, considering what we paid for him, he s been adequate but even players like Trossard or Merino are scoring and assisting almost as many.
What top club would have him as their starting striker, let alone fork out more than 60m for him?
I always hear this question… what top club would have Kai as their starting striker…
Who are really the top strikers/#9 at this moment?
Haaland? Lautaro? And???
(Vini and Mbappe are more wingers than strikers)
Can you really name a top one other than those?
I think it is a good sign on us trying to get Gyokeres (and/or Sesko), but the striker market is really dead.
You can name a dozen more strikers that could get about 15 goals for us, but definitely they will not offer the complete package like Kai did for us.
Merino and Trossard’s name were mentioned, they could not press like Kai, and they do not run into spaces and channels to pull defenders away from their positions, and they are not better passer than him; even they score similar amount of goals if opportunity is given.
I won’t claim to know anything about Sesko or Gyokeres beyond their appearance numbers, goal numbers and where they play but I definitely am not taking for granted that either of them will be better than Kai.
I think what we end up getting with either of them might be depth rather than upgrade.
He’s the third longest serving manager in the league, and manages a big wealthy club, so he’s obviolusly going to have spent more than almost any other PL manager.
But that’s what makes it strange, that in all the seasons Arteta has been here and how much he’s spent, our attack seems to have been ignored, despite the obvious lack of quality.
