January Transfer window thread

this has been about for several years and the clubs were probably informed even before that. My arguments are about the investments 10 years ago. All clubs have topped wage bills all the time, ours is no different. The cash injections would’ve left us with better players, not more or less wages etc. His arguments are not wrong in isolation, just that it doesn’t explain why we ended up here. Just that we are here now and the situation. Or there is a guess of how we ended up here and that reasoning is bad

I do not mind Özil’s wages, nor do I believe that some bad buys were the cause because compared to other clubs neither of them are particularly remarkable, we needed to pay fat wages to attract and keep less talented players however, that was an issue etc. But yeah I have said this elsewhere.

tl:dr; I agree with what you say though, we can’t just pump cash in during the winter transfer, but we wouldn’t anyway lol

I chuckled, this was going to be point C.

You’re absolutely correct. It doesn’t address “how we got here” fully. He is correct in stating that Wenger’s socialist wage structure is part of the problem. But that’s not the whole picture.

So Marseille are absolutely falling apart right now. I wonder if we could do a sneaky loan for a guy like Thauvin? But I genuinely don’t know if Emery wants an actual winger or if a guy who couldn’t hack it at Newcastle is really going to help us win the Europa League.

Best move the club can do right now is get rid of Emery ASAP. Hoping the last couple of shockers showed that it ain’t gonna be the good ol’ ‘give Wenger some players and he’ll do something with them’. Club needs a heavy slap. Cut the shit they’re doing and actually stop half-assing it.
I personally wanted Blanc or Ancelotti here but in hindsight Luis Nerique would have been a proper coach. He’s a dick but he’s one of those guys who wants to create his own project instead of being the board’s lackey, beggin for a job.

What is this misconception that anyone who failed before will never be good enough?
‘Found his level’ mentality .

We’re talking about very young people. Shit can go south. You never know. Fact is, he looks like threat back in Ligue 1 and even with the occasional national appearance (from the bench, at least).

I wasn’t trying to pick on old Florian. He is, after all, a World Cup winner I believe.

Damn, I actually wanted to add that it wasn’t directed at you specifically.

It’s a general thing that I notice around.

We are a notoriously fickle bunch (soccer fans in general). I also think there’s an element of fatalism attached to it. Like, “Oh no, we are so fucked so let’s go sign a guy who couldn’t even perform at a worse club, man we are so dumb, nothing matters lolololol” It’s a coping mechanism I use a lot and I’m sure others do too.

But then again the Lucas Perez deal happened so I’m not really sure that fatalism is so far out of bounds.

Yeah his wage structure was probably commie as fk, I’m not sure what to make of it since it’s about tactics to some degree that I don’t really understand anyway. But the main point I think I’ve been making for 10 years is that Wenger picked players out of a fee bracket that wasn’t set by him, rather he did well with the little he was given and I’d like to say that he was rather a victim of tight transfers due to the economic decisions made at the time of the stadium build (by the people who own the money) than a reason for why we spent so little… but I obviously wouldn’t call a victim on someone who made £7m/yr and could’ve fked off to several other top clubs at several times if he didn’t like it here so he was hardly a hostage (like say Rafa if one wants to call him that atm at Newcastle).

I also knew that we would be able to tell once he left and the transfer policy went on exactly the same, albeit we have better deals and the stadium is ‘done’, but I guess even I was naïve enough to think that they would at least give Emery a fat starting package to remodel the squad, instead they spent their usual amount on transfers and were done with it. But I mean, there’s always hope we’ll overcompensate next summer if we send a few packing?

We spent £70m with no outgoings to supplement his budget and renewed a ton on deals. This isn’t the ‘usual amount’ considering the spending from last season.

All the really needed last summer was a midfield signing in Torreira and a major CB signing. I disagree with the strategy last summer.

The Leno & Sokratis money should have been put together in an attempt to sign a quality CB, I thought this at the time and nothing I’ve seen this season has altered my view.

It’s hard to disagree, Leno and Sokratis just doesn’t raise the quality of the squad in terms of actual ability or potential talent which is the biggest issue with the signings. Which means later down the line they will just be bloats on the wage bill. It’s quantity over quality.

Really missed the boat on someone like Pavard for example who Bayern snapped up.

Ok, Coulthard. :poldi:

That was a very weird situation to have a World Cup winner playing on such a low end club team. He was never a realistic option for us.

Hold up, are you refering to the one and only David Coulthard. As in he used to say “Next year will be my year”, or have I read that wrong?

we’ve been spending £80-90m ever second year since we were done with the stadium, yes it is. And we have better deals now than we had 3 years ago.

A little aside, seems like wages aren’t an issue for the club, at least in the summer. (I was thinking that, if it was wages then that would affect loans too lol)

We can spend the money, just got to hope they decide to.

this was pretty much said in the video i posted that the steep incline of wages has fucked us and it was roundly mocked and general stated as bullshit but all of a sudden this comes up and it is legit :xhaka:

But apparently there has been room to spend with the wages the whole time.

The headline is misleading imo

there is wriggle room but why get shit players in jan to get us teetering on the brink especially buying them when we can wait until summer clear out a fucktonne of dross and make big changes, you arent gonna get a lot of good in january anyway i would have thought we would want to break the cycle of getting in players that fuck us up long term for a quick response of ‘panic buys’
