I know you champion bringing in a goal-scoring midfielder, either way we definitely need more reinforcement in that area. Ideally following a huge midfield clearout (Elneny, Xhaka. Ceballos from loan)

Kind of have to because were even when heās not in the team, and thatās saying something about how bad we can be. Unless thereās some one in the youth team that can step into that role or we buy some one to play in that position, he will probably be starting for the foreseeable future I thinks

I think he overtakes Mustafi as the worst signing in Arsenal history just because;
A) heās been captain
B) heās never not been a starter whereas Mustafi became a bench option for the last few seasons
C) heās made so many fucking errors
D) if you looked at every Arsenal game in his career you probably couldnāt name 10 great games heās had.

Itās not a popular opinion but he has a lot of mistakes in his games. With somebody like Koscielny, who was mistake prone himself, you could look past that because his level could be very high on his day. Xhaka is decent at best. That isnāt enough to compensate for all these brainfarts he has.
I donāt think he will be tbh simply because when/if we get rid we should be able to recoup some decent money.
In comparison we gave away Mustafi for a bag of Walkers, both are disastrous signings though. Pound to pound thereās not much in it
The nuance is that heās not shit and can have many good games, but he has awful decisions in his mind that can cost us at any time.
Plus he can slow the game down because heās so one-footed.
One of the alternatives is Ćdegaard in his position and that is miles better than what we have right now.
Arteta wonāt go for it for a long while yet. Guy has the learning speed of a really slow thing.

He will almost certainly stay this summer and I wouldnāt be shocked if they extend him and then try to add another body to replace Elneny and Dani. Heāll still be a starter next year which is such an indictment of the club. The fact that we have to constantly damn him with faint praise of āoh heās actually been okay latelyā is so telling. Heās just not good enough to take us where we want to go.

Yeah, if Arteta does last through the summer I think this issue will be very telling. I can understand why Xhaka has started a bunch this year because our other options beyond Partey just arenāt very good either (not much in it between him and Ceballos IMO). But if weāre not looking to improve on him that is a huge indictment.
Its not just that he is mediocre, its also that his brainfart propensity just doesnāt fit what Arteta seems to want to do on the pitch, which is play out from the back. He has always been susceptible to bad turnovers and its actually happening a lot recently (ie, turnover that led to the Leicester goal, the ridiculous floated pass that would have led to a Benfica goal if not for some heroics from Dani, etc). I donāt really see how a manager can simultaneously want to play this style and decide that Xhaka is going to be a cornerstone of his team.
Just too many major errors no matter how well he was playing outside of that. The dangerous passes from deep arenāt worth these mad howlers. Playing out from the back is overdone at this point but no excuse for that mistake.

Play Ćdegaard there.
That would be a disaster. Odegard doesnāt offer much in the ways of defense. Ceballos or even bringing Willock back would make better sense than playing Odegard as a CDM.
Diabolical mistake, been in decent form also so you just felt one of those was around the corner.
Tbf, Xhaka used to be useless defensively as well until Arteta arrived so itās not something he canāt work on. It is a bit late to try that though, heās going back to Madrid soon. Would have been interesting to see him transition into a Silva-esque #8.
