In my scenario, the only role the UK government has is financial.

It will interesting to see what happens with the Isle of Man and Jersey, who are both waiting for Royal Assent for their bills which passed. Neither of those are part of the NHS.

I think I read Jersey passed theirs, might be wrong about that. I have no idea what their situation is.

I do really feel a solution is needed for families with people living out horrible painful last days. But there needs to be protection for vulnerable people and I just don’t think that’s something that Britain can deliver.

Criminalising people who travel to Switzerland with dying relatives clearly needs to be gotten rid of.

Jersey and Isle of Man have both passed their bills, but as far as I am aware they both still needs Royal Assent to become law.

Usually this is just a formality, a rubber stamp if you will, but MoJ has been dragging its heels. It takes an average of 88 days usually to process these, but it’s now been ready to sign for nearly a year.

Such a dumb response to the by-election from the Tories and Reform, just to hate on Muslims.

It’s just all disingenuous.

Tories shown no interest in administering society the last 14 years under their watch letting it for a lack of better term ā€˜rot’ and have the cheek to have concerns about what’s ā€˜happening’.

None of these communities, enclaves or whatever exist in a vacuum nor their views. Nothing inconceivable is happening. Except a non-establishment party is standing to gain from it.

Starmer/Labour was at it too with the ā€˜sectarian’ complaints, which is probably the worse of them all lol.

This whole Brits abroad in Dubai discourse regarding tax shows just how the UK is built on the politics of envy.

And of course Ed Davey bringing it up in parliament, lib Dems so unserious.

Will we be taking their jewellery off them upon entry to ensure they pay their way? :slightly_smiling_face:

Nah but seriously, I think it is pretty crass of him to make the point in parliament. Lets at least get them home and safe first before we start making points about the state rescuing people who moved away with the express purpose of not contributing towards that state.

Obviously the stereotype of the Dubai deano is funny and you can take the piss.

However they wouldn’t say this about other countries.

They didn’t say that about people going to Spain for example.

And these people contributed a lot before moving as they obviously had to work before moving to afford it.

It’s jealousy which Brits love to do.

Spain isnt a notorious tax haven, so I guess that’s maybe why. Lot of people specifically move to Dubai etc for the tax purposes, that’s not really the case for people who retire and move to Spain to enjoy a bit of sun in the final decade of their lives.

In my last post, I was thinking of these rich and somewhat famous and political people like Ant Middleton and Isabel Oakeshott who try to make a virtue of not paying tax, I do think there is a point to be made there, or at least an irony of sorts to be noted. But there’s no question that they should be brought back to safety if that’s what they want and need, and like I said, I think it is really poor form for a politician to start making these points before people are safe.

And while I’m here, I’d feel similarly about people like Phil Collins, Lewis Hamilton, Ratcliffe etc who moved to places like Switzerland or Monaco cos they wanted to keep all of their millions/billions. It’s not cos its the UAE specifically.

Oh yeah that’s a much better example, Switzerland or Monaco.

But maybe this discourse would still be happening.

In any case - Europeans challenge to not embarras yourself for a day - impossible.

I think many envy the glitzy lifestyle and tax advantages of those who move to the Middle East and is appealing to many Brits but those that I’ve known who’ve gone to work there are actually working hard with the intention of coining it for a few years then coming home. And it’s not just suited executives, it’s builders, engineers, even insurance claims people.

I never pursued it because I would find it too boring, all that glass and steel and soul-less shopping centres. Fuck that for a game of soldiers, I prefer Southern Europe to anywhere else on earth, including the UK.

Fair play to them though, it’s the billionaire and multi-millionaire owners of companies domiciled here and making good money out of doing business in the UK but running shadow companies in tax havens with the deliberate intention of avoiding tax that we need to be getting angry about. Along with any UK Government (and it’s all of them so far) that allows the tax burden to fall squarely on small businesses and those in regular employment.

Good. I hope when he died he wasn’t surrounded by his family after a lengthy, painful illness.
