Ethan Nwaneri (53)

Very mature performance. Knew when to slow things down and when to turn the screw.

He’s good enough to start certain games, but I’d still like to stay on the side of caution. By that I mean cup games where we are favourites and home games where we should dominate the ball.

Shouldn’t be starting in either of the next 2. Senior players need to be carrying us through those games.

It’s crazy how a professional footballer can shoot the ball into the goal in a similar way on two separate occasions.

I don’t think you quite understand the depth of finesse Ethan possesses though, mate.

We are blessed he doesn’t suffer from Nelsonitis

Something Iwobi was cursed with too.

If you weren’t a fan before, you might be now. The little boy in the picture brought this sign to the game on Wednesday. Ethan’s dad spotted it and told our number 53. Nwaneri made sure that the boy got his shirt.

Fuck it start him in the next 2. I feel the magic now!

So he got half an hour to prove his worth.

Well, performing against Bolton and Preston, and performing against a decent PL side away from home are indeed a completely different ball game.

Didn’t look like he was ready for the chance that was given to him but in fairness to the lad, none of the subs impressed and neither did the team that started the game.

It was moreso about the shouts to play him more in the PL and I agree with that in general but it just shows how tough a step up it is to really make your mark in this league. He’s not playing against kids anymore and will not have the threshold that type of level allowed him where he looks like a big fish in a small pond.

Hopefully, some fans become a bit more realistic now. Even Lionel Messi came into a team that included the likes of Xavi, Iniesta and Ronaldinho. This 17 year old kid isn’t going to drive us to the title.

He is a star in the making, but Inter and Chelsea away aren’t good development grounds either. Play him in home games where we dominate and cup games.

I don’t think he looked that much out of depth at all.

He looked good on the ball. Was able to get himself out of tricky situations and create some space for himself. Looked bad off the ball, but I think there’s some blame on Arteta there too.

I don’t know why he was pushed so high up the pitch, to prey on some through balls from Saka and White in some halfspaces, but was unable to time his runs properly… No sense to use a guy of his profile in a sistuation like that. He should be coming to the ball, drawing players on to him and pass to others or shoot… Obviously he can’t recognise the movement and the runs properly at this stage. It took a lot of time even for Odegaard to develop that.

Also, overall, the team looked so bad, it’s ridiculous to make such a big judgement on him. I don’t think even Ode would have looked much better, also knowning he looked quite mediocre this season before the injury anyway.

Nwaneri was absolutely fine and should continue to get time in the league.

Yeah I think it’s wild to even suggest that Nwaneri isn’t ready because he didn’t pull a blinder whilst the whole squad was shit.

We know the quality he has, and will continue to show it when given the opportunity.

Bringing him on when there’s not enough time to make an impact says more about the manger than him tbh.

What were the ‘senior’ players doing for the first 60 minutes before he came on?

Sweet fuck all.

Maybe actually let him start the game rather than bringing him on when we’re struggling or it’s gone to shit

Without getting into how he faired in the 60 minutes of PL football he’s played so far, is it really that wild to suggest a 17 year old isn’t ready?

In normal circumstances I’d agree with you, but Nwaneri just seems build different compared to all our other Hale End graduates bar Saka.

When Saka was playing LB at barely 18, I don’t recall the narrative being so protective over him.

Completely different context.
