Emiliano Martinez

Is Bernd Leno able to build from the back like Martinez? These goals don’t happen if the keeper isn’t confident taking the ball under quite a significant amount of pressure.

Leno can make 5-10 yard passes as well

It’s more about if the ball receiver can handle it for me

I was watching those waiting for the difficult passes to show up lol

I think many keepers are booting that away, no hesitation.

I think Leno is more effective with passing in the defensive third but Martinez better delivering to midfield

Perhaps.

Those kinda passes are fully within Leno’s skillset though

Fully deserves to keep the starting spot. Been a step ahead of Leno so far. Best keeper for a long long time if he continues like this.

If he keeps this up hopefully we’ll get 30 million for Leno who is still a good keeper in his own right.

I like Martinez but people are getting so harsh on Leno. Guy was literally our second best player after Auba for like two years straight.

OK, Enough is enough…Emi has come in and done a fantastic job…WHICH IS WHAT A NUMBER 2 DOES…He has taken his chance, played really well, but he is still our number 2…LENO IS THE BETTER KEEPER…Emi has just done his job, thanks, and good luck trying to be number 1 this season…
Which, btw, if he does this, then all the best to him…How good it is to have 2 decent goalkeepers…

he tweets above kissing the trophy ‘i love this club’ but he doesnt mind demanding the 1 spot and demanding (supposedly) 40 games a season, if you love the club work with it and come to a compromise there is nothing wrong with being a cup keeper and sub you will still get a mountain of games and help the club you supposedly love.

Leno was bought because he’s pretty good playing out from the back, and he is very good on the ball too.

Lovely stuff.

If we weren’t such a small dick club we’d be in the CL and we’d have the opportunity to play both.

No doubt. Leno is very adept at his feet. I’m just not sure that he’s making a short pass inside our own penalty with full pressure from the Liverpool/Man City attackers. That’s not me saying Leno is bad on the ball. A lot of keepers who are decent ballplayers would look to play longer in that situation.

This is where the lack of fans comes into play I think. Martinez has been class at this, other than a time he hit it off Firmino. Surely though it’s harder to play that type of dangerous football in front of 60 thousand people cheering and jeering you than it is in an empty stadium.

No one ever mentions the fan situation when discussing Leno v Martinez but I think it’s a huge point of discussion when it comes to a goalkeeper.

oh for sure, I think the numbers bear that out. I remember seeing a tweet that illustrated it.

Leno is better at long passes with feet and throwing the ball for quick breaks.
Martinez is better at short passes.

They both offer a slightly different skillset and we can be satisfied with both.

Did he start yesterday just as a “thanks for everything but you’ll be on the bench from here on out” gesture or do we think he might actually be first choice?

TBH I think this applies to the whole team. Covid has done this team a favour in that sense

Very true.

Was discussing this with a few friends yesterday. Leicester and Liverpool appear to suffer with no fans. Arsenal and Manchester United are in their element with no fans (no one to get on their back after a first 10 mins of no goals and misplaced passes)
