That’s how I saw him and our system primarily this season, of course expecting Partey to be more available than he was.

The biggest weakness in Rice’s play and the area he needs to improve the most, if he wants to become an elite 6, is his play back to the opponent and ball progression under pressure.

He tends to panick when he has someone on his back and mostly goes for a conservative/safe option. If you even look at Jorginho, not to mention Partey, they are ice cold in those situations, they have that 360 vision and just take their time to make a simple yet progressive pass.

Rice is skilled enough, it’s not about the technical quality, more about the habits, quick decision making in very specific situations. (same as some very strong, fairly technical strikers who don’t know how to play with their back to the goal)

The number 6 role could be the most diffucult one tactially in the modern football at least… Even guys like Rodri or Partye didn’t really play that role exclusively in their early years, as many other top 6s in the past… We all look at Rodri as the perfect terminator from the future now, but just go back to his early City days, you could see a massive drop when he was in the team compared to Fernandinho… Took some time even for him properly fit in.

Atm there’s no need to push Rice there considering he can bring so much in another role with his athleticism, energy, quality do drive the ball etc… Most importantly his ball winning quality in dangerous areas. While he get himself into good forward positions too.

He’s still young and intelligent enough to grow into that role later in his career.

He made a 60 yard run in the 97th minute to score. I think he’s just fine.

Could not have been more wrong about this guy in the summer, thought he was a nothing special English runner who’d just lost 20 games and we didn’t need him cos we had Partey.

The guy is on the way to world class, 10 motm in a season and 15 G/A in the PL, unbelievable. Glad Mikel likes using him as an 8, he looked amazing there from the start and continues to show it every week.

Good to hear and kinda checks out.

Seen him make some really nasty tackles, not for his opponent but for himself.
Has often had me thinking “he’s won the ball but at what cost?” and then continues like nothing has happened.

Sounds like he may have hypermobility, (like me coincidentally), which is actually an injury risk in itself.
