Bukayo Saka (7)

Well there isn’t, and it still doesn’t change the fact that Saka is a top 2 right winger in the world.

this is subjective and we all can have our opinions.

I just wanted to point out that, A is WC has no meaning to B, the next one up, even the world is only down to two RW.

world-class
adjective

Someone or something world-class is one of the best that there are of that type in the world.

So by definition, isn’t Saka a world-class right winger? What am I missing?

you are missing the context and parameters there.

We need a better definition. The one you quoted is highly flawed.

Put Saka in any other era of football and he doesn’t come near the top of those players.

He’s not world class, sorry.

There is a drought of WC players in general in football atm only a very few handful of players fit that bill for me over time.

Henry, Lewandowski, Fabregas, KDB, Xavi, Bergkamp etc

That’s the bar for me.

Then there’s God tier, which only Messi, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and a few others fit.

Saka as great as he is at only 22, doesn’t hold a candle to any of these.

Maybe he will in time though.

Oh the what defines world class argument again :man_facepalming:

Shouldn’t it be era-dependent and thus the top guys in their position in the specific era would be world-class?

Let’s be real, most of the players of yesteryear would struggle if they were put directly into today’s game without any time to adapt or without having come up under the same circumstances etc, so if it’s a comparison on that basis then you can’t really say the above. And it doesn’t mean those players are shit or weren’t world class.

Players now are fitter, faster and generally get better at everything over time and today’s players play againat those fitter, faster players. So yeah, direct comparisons like that aren’t fair or measurable.

You can also get into the argument about the era and whether the overall quality of player meant the bwst ones stood out more.

All in all, it’s just a bit pointless to debate on who is world class, I’d rather focus on contribution to winning in the current moment. Everyone will have a different view and many influenced by their own biases lol

I think there’s an element of truth here. Though I guess I’m just not really impressed with the players of this generation versus the past.

Outside of Messi, Ronaldo, KDB and maybe Mbappe, nobody really does it for me. Whereas the players from the 90s/00s were really special.

Maybe the game has changed, and the importance of tactics and athleticism has taken precedent over raw ability and expression.

World class or not he’s ours and that’s all I care about!

Comparing across eras doesn’t work in any sport. Would Usyk beat Muhammed Ali? Very possibly due to sports science, research, training methods etc. Is Usyk conparable to Ali? Of course not.

Would the fifteenth fastest 100m male sprinter beat the fastest from 1984? Yes.

Is KDB better than Platini? No idea as I didn’t watch Platini but I’m certain KDB is more athletic and has more goal contributions in his prime.

It doesn’t work. Judging 22 year old Saka (I think that’s his age) to retired legends is moronic. Is he as good as Bale and Hazard were in the Prem? Everybody will say no naturally, but were 22 year old Bale and Hazard as consistent as Saka? Was 22 Giggs better than Saka? Yes, but Saka scores more.

Saka is one of the best wingers in the world and this isn’t a purple. He’s world class. Simple really. If people need him to score or assist vs Porto to cement it - whatever floats your boat.

I mean you’ve got people questioning Kane because he didn’t score against Leverkusen or Lazio ffs!

The Foden argument is silly. He’s brilliant. Both him and Saka perform similarly in the Premier League, yet Saka is far better at international level. Both are English!

Ferdinand hailed him as world class while saying Saka isn’t, with the difference being trophies, which seems wrong-headed to me.

If Foden came through our system and played for us, and Saka theirs, Ferdinand would be calling Saka world class and not Foden. His assessment of their individual merits or status is being led by the achievements of the teams they play for, which is a little bit flawed to me. Foden is great and has obviously contributed to City’s success, but I sincerely believe that they are just as successful if you switch Saka and Foden, or if Foden didn’t exist and City had some other top class wide attacker, which they would owing to their unlimited resources and desire for success.

I don’t think Foden is central enough to their success for their trophy haul to merit him being labelled world class on that basis alone.

Agree. The trophy argument is so lame. I guess Akanji is a better cb than Saliba based on Rio’s assertion.
