He apparently had a bust-up with Steve Holland during the World Cup, and that was why he was sent home.

Southgate has denied a couple times but all reputable sources have reported that it did in fact happen.
It’s certainly suspicious that he wasn’t called up again since then despite his excellent form and versatility, and now that Gareth wants to bring him back in Ben himself doesn’t want to join them.

Walker has dropped off a bit, so has Trippier, James is constantly injured and Trent has been used as a midfielder recently under Southgate.

There’s definitely an opening for Ben to claim that spot.
