I could only watch on my phone while traveling. Was it a foul on Gabriel in the build up to that first golden chance for Watkins? I never got a real look.

Cheating cunt. Falls backwards with no push from the front, and no pull from behind. Ben White, the only Arsenal player close to him, has his arms being tangled up with the Villa defender, no contact with the cunt at all.
It looked like it in real time to me. My bias aside, I imagine that VAR would have had a look had Watkins not missed.
Between that and Rata’s monster reaction save, things could have gone the other way. Getting 3 points in such a tough away fixture is really a boost.
