Arsène Wenger

For what is worth, it was mentioned in Chapman’s podcast yesterday that Arsene has been invited to come at games multiple times and has always rejected their offers. They suggested that he may still be bitter by the way they let him go in his last year.

There was talk earlier in the season about Arsene coming in an advisory role and Arteta publicly entertained the idea.

We did pay his 8m wages every season so he should show a little respect, especially after lying to them consistently when he was here.

I don’t actually agree with this, but I’ll tell you something…

I would rather have Arsene here, lying to us constantly and have us challenging for the top four, playing entertaining football, than PR Teta playing shite football and getting us to 10th place…

Okay Wenger should not give a fuck about Arsenal fans in a classy manner.

Wenger is too classy not to care.

Me too.
As much as I criticised his later seasons with us, as well as sometimes misleading the supporters, he still got us playing decent football, with mostly a top four place and I would have him rather than Arteta.

Should never go back is pretty much a rule of football.
Apart from Mourinho at a financial supported Chelsea it never really works out. Keegan, Dalglish, Kendall testament too this.

I agree, and It’s very unusual for anyone to go back, either as a player or manager and be as good as they’d been, because they’re older and often the club they are going back to is desperate.

There aren’t many examples but Keown did better when he came back to us , although he was young when he left, and Moyes, astonishingly, did better when he went back to West Ham.
But, I can’t think of many more.

Thing is Wenger basically ran the club from top to bottom for about 6/7 years after Dein left in 2007. So in a way he is also responsible for what happened at the club, Wenger was a legend and the most successful manager in recent years he had a good relationship with the Kroenke’s and the board, I believe they would of listened to anything he would of told them. The board would repeatedly say there was money to spend if needed, and we saw that with all the shit little purchases and then the Ozil Purchase but Wenger wasn’t decisive in the transfer market, he dilly dailied and we would end up buying crappy panic buy players at the end of the transfer window. This bigger role that Wenger was given is when we started to see a major decline at the club, he wasn’t fully focused on the pitch anymore, he was managing wages and transfers and all this extra stuff as a result the majority of our purchases were garbage and the success on the pitch started to decline. Wenger could of asked for someone else to replace Dein so he could go back to focusing on the football but it’s clear he enjoyed the extra power, he could of also helped the Kroenkes set up a structure that would work, but he didn’t. Which is why you will never see him come out and take shots at them. Because he was in part responsible for all the going ons at the club. This narrative that he was just some coach getting the best out of the club whilst not involved with the finances or decisions is just revisionism in my opinion.

All good points, I just can’t help but notice our decline on the pitch, drop in player quality, Dein leaving the club, new stadium opening all coincided with the Kroenke’s majority purchase of the club in 2007. We went from Henry/Viera to Van Persie/Cesc to Giroud/Arteta and now Auba/Xhaka…every generation of players worse than the last.

I think the narrative that Wenger had full control of the club only helps to shield the board from responsibility.

It’s baffling to me that people still argue against this.

His intentions were right and if anything at first he was guilty of trying to hard.
Lost his way though and was to proud and stubborn in changing course. Shaped and moulded a lot of that boardroom and the subsequent successors have been as woefully inept as the predecessors.
Club hasn’t been run right since the move from Highbury.

Wasn’t there someone in here that said Wenger is a demigod?

I think that’s a fair conclusion because it does seem that way but we now have a long enough sample of KSE ownership to know that they prefer to delegate responsibility to those who “know” and sit in the background, it doesn’t seem like they make many demands or interfere in the day to day running of the club, and for years that responsibility fell to Wenger, and honestly I feel like Wenger enjoyed it.

There’s no way Wenger couldn’t of got someone to replace Dein if he really wanted to right?, he could of at any point in 2007/8/9/10 sat with the board and said football is moving towards this model etc… and the added responsibility has taken away from my time on the pitch I think so and so would be good for this role and so and so for this, and the board not followed his recommendation. But he didn’t want to, he liked his “socialist wage” structure and controlling the finances of the club, he liked supposedly playing the market to find the “right” players.

This is why we’re in such a mess now, because when Wenger left the people in charge we’re basically Wolves in sheep’s clothing, and exploited The Kroenkes lack of footballing knowledge and like others have stated the Kroenkes would of thought that on paper these people are all capable seeing as one was from Barcelona and the other from Dortmund. Had Wenger (who would of known the best people in the sport) helped the Kroenkes we could of had people like Campos etc instead of that bald fraud gazidis and that dodgy cunt Raul at the club.

Edit: I will also add like @Stroller was saying, Wenger didn’t do this because he was some evil power grabbing dictator, he took on this responsibility because he loved the club and in his heart thought he could do it all.

When you say ran the club, what does it entail?
What as per you did he undertake in those years?

I am not surprised everyone agreed with your post because this forum can be so narrow minded
